Paige, Davey Richards and Latest WWE NXT Developmental News
The latest news from the world of NXT is a peek at the future, including word on the potential future kingpin of the WWE Divas division, Paige, and Davey Richards, who may be changing the developmental landscape before long.
NXT has announced who will challenge Paige next for the Women's Championship, and it promises to be one of the better Divas bouts of the year. As for Richards, the latest updates offer some clarity about where he is headed next.
A college football player is getting a tryout, William Regal has wisdom to share, and Gerald Brisco was recently busy looking for more talent to add to the WWE developmental system.
Davey Richards Update
1 of 5Last week, Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards made their NXT debut as The American Pitbulls. It's still not clear what either man's future with WWE will be, though.
Richards isn't officially signed with WWE, but he did recently announce that he was no longer with Ring of Honor. Per his Facebook page, Richards writes the following:
"With a heavy heart I can announce I announce that myself and ROH have parted ways for good and I will not be at Final Battle. Please continue to support them and the incredible talent they have. Thanks for the memories. It was an amazing ride.
"
For those who will take that as a definite sign that Richards is WWE bound, a report from Mike Johnson of PWInsider creates some doubt. Johnson writes about Gabe Sapolsky of Evolve and Dragon Gate USA interacting with Richards on Facebook, including a possible tease of those two joining forces.
Even if he does have a brief run with Evolve, the fact that WWE gave Richards and Edwards a shot on NXT and new names suggests that the company wants both of them. Expect The American Pitbulls to be regulars on NXT, for a short time at least, once their contract situation is sorted.
William Regal's Advice to Potential WWE Prospects
2 of 5
William Regal essentially gave potential future pro wrestlers an online crash course.
Writing on TwitLonger.com, Regal doled out a surplus of advice to would-be wrestling prospects and performers looking to work their way into WWE.
Regal writes, "It takes a lot more work to being a WWE superstar than an [sic] few Pro Wrestling holds and throws. You must develop all your skills and that usually comes from help from more experienced pro's."
He talks about finding a reputable wrestling school, having good manners and practicing mannerisms. The highly respected grappler offers a Marty Jones vs. Terry Rudge match as an example of the standard in technical wrestling to aim for.
The advice is simple, honest and incredibly valuable. He quotes Jim Ross and Roddy Piper in a free lesson that will certainly educate a few wrestling hopefuls.
College Football Player to Get Tryout
3 of 5Gunner Miller may be the next football player to transition into pro wrestling.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga linebacker is set to try out for WWE developmental in June. He sounds hopeful that he'll impress WWE enough to earn a contract.
John Frierson of Chattanooga's Times Free Press quoted Miller as saying, "I think this is actually kind of realistic. I'm actually talking to the head scout and I've been talking to him for a while. They seem pretty interested, but it all comes down to a tryout."
Miller is 6'1" and 235 pounds, and were it not for Gunnar from TNA having such a similar name, he'd have a ready-made ring name. WWE has been wise to pluck its prospects from a variety of sources including the independent wrestling circuit, college wrestling and college football.
Gerald Brisco Scouting Prospects
4 of 5
WWE's search for the next great Superstar continues.
In addition to setting up a tryout with Gunner Miller from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Gerald Brisco recently went on a major scouting trip.
WrestlingInc.com reported that Brisco "was scouting talents for the company at a wrestling show at Madison Square Garden that featured a number of MMA fighters doing wrestling matches as well as a lot of major college teams and local area teams."
Earlier reports, such as this one from WrestlingInc.com, had Brisco attending a University of Oklahoma wrestling event that same day with Jim Ross. Instead, Brisco was in New York taking a look at a number of potential additions to the WWE Performance Center.
Paige's Next Challenger
5 of 5
Most fans already know that Adrian Neville is challenging Bo Dallas for the NXT Championship on this week's NXT. Neville defeated Sami Zayn on last week's NXT to earn the title shot.
He won't be the only one looking to dethrone a champion, though.
WWE NXT's Twitter account announced that Natalya will challenge Paige for the Women's Championship as well.
With those two title bouts booked, this week's show should be one of the better ones in a while. One has to wonder if having Paige take on Natalya is a means to test how she does against a main-roster Diva in preparation for a call-up in the near future.
