With only a handful of games left to be played, these recently released Week 15 BCS standings are going to play a huge role in determining which teams go the national title game, which make a BCS bowl and which have to settle for a lesser bowl.

Let’s take a look at the updated rankings and recap the action that shaped the polls.

No. 3 Auburn stunned No. 4 Alabama in the Iron Bowl. It was undoubtedly the biggest story of the week, as the Tigers returned a missed field goal for 100-plus yards to steal a 34-28 win over the Crimson Tide. This outcome propelled Auburn to the SEC Championship in Atlanta and shook up the BCS rankings.

Florida State is now poised to contest for a national championship, as the No. 1 Seminoles took care of business against rival Florida. The Gators put up little resistance on the way to a 37-7 FSU win. The Seminoles just have to get past No. 20 Duke in the ACC Championship to punch a ticket to Pasadena for the title game.

Ohio State finished its regular season undefeated for the second straight year. The No. 2 Buckeyes avoided an upset at the hands of Michigan by intercepting a two-point conversion attempt at the end of a 42-41 contest. Now, if they can take down Michigan State in the Big Ten Championship, they will likely be heading to the national championship game.

No. 5 Missouri outlasted No. 24 Texas A&M in the season finale and earned the right to meet Auburn in the Georgia Dome. The Tigers are definitely a long shot to make the BCS Championship, but shouldn't be discounted during this crazy season where the unexpected continues to happen.

The Battle of the Palmetto State was decided in favor of South Carolina after the No. 8 Gamecocks defeated No. 13 Clemson. The Tigers committed six turnovers in the contest, which proved to be critical in a 31-17 defeat.

Stanford, South Carolina, Baylor and Michigan State round out the Top 10 in this edition of the BCS standings, as each program won in Week 15.

Other notable results from Week 14 include No. 18 UCLA's victory over USC in their war for Los AngelesBruins quarterback Brett Hundley racked up 288 yards in the 35-14 victory, which was the ninth of the season for three-loss UCLA. USC finishes its 2013 campaign with a somewhat respectable 9-4 record.

No. 11 Arizona State is primed for its Pac-12 Championship showdown with the Cardinal after routing rival Arizona and earning the Territorial Cup upon a 58-21 victory in the Duel in the Desert.

Oregon barely survived the Civil War against rival Oregon State. The No. 12 Ducks edged the Beavers, 36-35, in a hard-fought contest.

Speaking of upsets, Penn State pulled a big one against Wisconsin. The Nittany Lions took down the No. 21 Badgers, 31-24, in their season finale.

San Jose State also managed to score a win over Fresno State. The No. 22 Bulldogs suffered their first loss of the season and had their BCS hopes dashed with this disappointing outcome.

The results from this past holiday weekend set up an epic finish for many teams.

On top of the upcoming slate of conference championship games, the Big 12 and American Athletic Conference regular seasons will not conclude until next week.

There is still plenty of time and several scenarios in which the BCS picture could drastically change as a result of these matchups. Make sure you tune in and check back in with Bleacher Report next week for the latest rankings release.
