MMA Fans: What Is Wrong With MMA Today?!?!?
You know, I have to say I am new to MMA. Of course I have been watching off and on, but have never been officially into it. I am more so a pro-wrestling and football fan, but MMA has really caught my eye.
I love how it lives up to its name all the time, Mixed Martial Arts. We see a Boxer take on a Wrestler, we see Karate fighters take on Kick Boxers, I mean it is endless. The people who came up with it are geniuses I have to say.
However, the MMA fans seem to have a complex when it comes to fights. When I watch a fight I see two men slugging it out, or using technical skills to win a fight. The the winner is the undisputed best man in that fight.
The problem is that many other MMA fans do not think this. It came to a head for me when I was discussing the Frank Mir/Brock Lesnar fight. As I mentioned before, I am a pro-wrestling fan so I knew who Brock Lesnar was of course.
I obviously knew who Frank Mir was, but of course I did not see every one of his fights so I was not very familiar with him in the octagon.
Lesnar brought a lot of attention to UFC, more so that usual anyway. All of his fights have gotten great ratings. It is because of his years in the WWE of course. If this would have been some dude of the street we would probably care less.
Sure, he would have had the same skills and all, but he wouldn't have near the publicity. But because he was he got both good and bad reviews from MMA fans.
He was doing well in his first few fights before Mir, he may not have won them all but he had a good showing.
Many of the hardcore fans hated the fact that a former pro-wrestler was coming to, in a way, "invade" their sport. When Lesnar was not doing that what so ever, only trying to fit in this MMA world.
Fans got on the bandwagon with his first few fights which was nice to see for the current UFC Heavyweight Champion.
The problem was they were to defensive of him.
They saw him do well against Frank Mir, and then all the sudden Mir caught him and won the fight.
Mir won right?
Not to some fans
The claimed that Lesnar was the better fighter in that fight because he was dominating.
Ok, let me get this straight. Lesnar dominated the fight, yet lost, so he is the better fighter? That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.
He is not the better fighter if he loses the fight.
Sure Mir was off his game during this fight, he had it taken to him there is no dispute there.
The problem is that the fans think that because Lesnar did so well that he should have won, so they put it in their obviously idiotic brain that he did. Which is probably the same kind of brain UFC President Dana White has.
Mir wins yet Lesnar is put in the UFC Championship fight. Of course Mir did get some consolation as he did get a fight for the Interim belt because of Couture's UFC absence. In which he did not do the best he could have.
I kind of feel White was really happy to have a marketable person like Lesnar, which was why he put him in the fight against Couture instead of Mir. Sure, Mir had some MMA fame, but he had no where near the fame Lesnar did.
So White wanted money, which he got. He also wanted a new champion too. See, if you are familiar with Randy Couture you know he wanted to leave the sport of MMA. Problem was that he had a contract that wouldn't let him.
He had to do a few more fights by this contract, which he didn't want to do. So, when you think about it, there is a possibility Couture didn't try as much as he could have.
He wanted to go, and if he dropped the belt he could easily get away. Am I saying it was fixed? No. Am I saying that the Couture wanted out and would do anything to leave? Yes.
I'll take nothing away from Lesnar, he went out and won. So he does deserve to be the UFC Champ.
But this was huge for Lesnar and even more so for Dana White. Because not only was he happy Couture was out of his hair, but he also had a marketable figure in Brock Lesnar.
I feel Lesnar will go down sooner rather than later because of the lack of experience he has compare to those he will face down the road. But for now he is the current champ and White couldn't be happier.
However, this does not change the fact that Mir should have been the man to face Couture. Who knows who would have won? But in the end it was all about business. When it should have been about the sport itself and who deserved the fight.
As I said, Mir got his consolation. But it shouldn't have happened that way if you ask me.
Which this could be why in the future we will see undeserving people in title fights when there are others out there who deserve to be in those title fights.
And fans are following suit too, saying something that UFC would say by saying, "well they had a good showing, so lets give them a title fight" when they lose.
What is wrong with you people? Why are winners out there, who are not as big of a name as others put in the background?
They should not worry as much about what sells their main event and give people a good fight by putting the deserving person in the title fight. It is the fair thing to do if you ask me.
This is not like Boxing either where you buy one fight and that is it. UFC PPVs are a nice chunk of change, but they at least have 3 fights. So, put your big names in the PPVs, but give the deserving people title fights.
You give people the right fighters in those fights, while also giving them the names they know too.
Can UFC always put fighters who are deserving in fights? No. Which is understandable considering they need rest and training to prepare.
So someone could be facing the champion and then face the deserving in the next PPV or something.
But that doesn't happen as much anymore. A lot of the time, the Mir/Lesnar thing happens. Where you put one in for business reasons.
This is just plain wrong and should not happen if you ask me.
But of course, I would like to know your opinion as hardcore MMA fans.
