The Wyatt Family Are Good Heels but Could Make Great Babyfaces

Justin LaBarJun 1, 2018

The Wyatt Family are going to make great babyfaces sooner than later.

When I think of the evolution of the trio, I think about The Undertaker and Mankind's career. I don't think The Wyatt Family will have a WrestleMania undefeated streak, nor do I think they will make a career out of being slammed on thumb tacks or off of cages.

I can see The Wyatts being another example of a mysterious character(s) debuting as a heel but evolving to strong babyfaces due to their audience having a genuine interest in them.

As of Friday, The Undertaker debuted exactly 23 years ago in 1990 at Survivor Series. By 1992, he was a babyface. His character remained protected, and the gimmick was as interesting as ever. The fans had never seen anything quite like his and Paul Bearer's presentation. This intrigue pushes heel heat aside, and you want to see how much destruction he can cause. This made The Undertaker a babyface. He wasn't pandering to the audience or even changing his in-ring style; he was just being booked against the bad guys.

Eventually the character evolved even more to where he did play to the crowd in his own way. He began speaking more for himself and referred to the fans as “creatures of the night” at one point.

Mankind debuted his character in 1996, and by 1997 he was being cheered as we started to learn more of his past as Cactus Jack and ambitions to be a playboy known as Dude Love.

I see the same path for The Wyatt Family, and it makes sense. The problem with allowing characters like them or The Undertaker or Mankind to remain heel for too long is it takes away from the character. If booked as a heel for too long they go through too many payoffs where the babyface goes over on them, and it hurts the mysterious image their character carries.

By making Bray Wyatt and company faces, they can then grow their characters, which is something unlike anything we've seen in a while. If they get beaten by heels, it will be because the heels cheated and had to use any means necessary. The Wyatt Family will get justice by the end of the feud, and the fan support will grow.

Ever since their debut, people have been talking about the possibility of a feud with them versus The Shield. It's been teased recently on WWE television. If the two were to feud, The Wyatt Family would be booked and received by the fans as the babyfaces.

The Shield comes off as ruthless and slimy assassins for hire. Whether it was Paul Heyman or The Authority, whoever is paying them is who they listen to. The Wyatt Family contains a passive aggressiveness that is appealing from the moment they make their entrance, pronouncing “we're here.” They come with smiles in their promos. It's well known and respected that they can get physical, but there is a certain likable quality to them.

People are excited to see them, just as they were when the gong would hit and lights would go off for The Undertaker.

The Wyatt Family has endless potential with where their careers go in the WWE storylines. The entrance can evolve. The members can evolve. The entire presentation can grow. It can best do this if they are babyfaces and don't have to run and tuck their tails between their legs.
