Lions Spotlight: Jason Hanson

Dan GutowskyMay 27, 2009

One of the only stable aspects of the Lions franchise in recent years has been the play and presence of kicker Jason Hanson.  He joined Detroit as a 2nd round draft pick in 1992 and is now the eighth leading scorer in NFL history with 1,747 points.

Here's our list of questions for Jason as we analyze his career in Detroit as a Lion:

1.  What are the aspects of your job that change from year to year and from coaching staff to coaching staff? (Hanson has played under seven head coaches during his career)

2.  How do you avoid becoming bored during practices?

3.  You obviously have to have a sense of comfort and timing with your placeholder but do you really have to work with the other nine players on the kicking unit?

4.  How hard is losing on you personally when you're usually not responsible?

5.  How envious are you of other kickers who have made big kicks in important games?

6.  Tell us about your pregame ritual and what do you do during the game to stay sharp and mentally engaged?

7.  Do you have to work hard to stay loose when an important field goal attempt is coming up or do how do you mentally process being in a pressure situation?

8.  What's the best part of being a placekicker?

9.  At this point of your career are special teams coaches more receptive to your input or do you try and avoid that?

10.  What are your impressions of Jim Schwartz and the new Lions coaching staff and how are they different from previous coaching staffs?
