Manchester United Transfer News: 5 Potential January Targets

Chris LinnellNov 17, 2013

With January fast approaching, David Moyes will be assessing his options for the upcoming transfer window. Manchester United have made a steady start to the Premier League season, but the right signing could prove critical in any future title race.

Having only signed Marouane Fellaini in the summer transfer window and missing out on a number of options, David Moyes may look to be more active in January.

United have been linked with a number of players, as the media and fans alike anticipate changes in the upcoming winter months. Here is a look at the Red Devil’s potential targets.

Feel free to open a discussion regarding this topic in the comment section below.

Leighton Baines

According to the Daily Mail, United will make it third time lucky in January by landing Everton full-back Leighton Baines.

Patrice Evra is expected to leave United next summer to return to his native France, and Moyes sees the 29-year-old as his long-term successor at left-back.

Baines has continued to impress for Everton and England with his performances reaching such a standard that Ashley Cole's national team place is by no means assured.

This season he has made 11 Premier League appearances, whilst scoring two goals and creating 14 chances.

Angel Di Maria

2 of 5

United have been linked with Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria throughout the past week. Allegedly, David Moyes is a big fan of the Argentina International and will make a move for his signature in January.

Having played 16 times for Real Madrid, Di Maria has scored three times. However, Gareth Bale’s recovery from injury could leave him watching Los Blancos from the sidelines.

This situation has left the 25-year-old pondering his future during a season that ends with a World Cup in Brazil. Could he soon follow ex-teammate Mesut Ozil with a move to the Premier League?

Ander Herrera

3 of 5

David Moyes may have missed out on his man in the summer, but a second swoop for the Athletic Bilbao midfielder could be on the cards given the Reds' well-documented midfield problems.

Herrera has been forced into taking a bit-part role at Bilbao since his summer move to Old Trafford fell through. Despite playing just one full match, he has successfully accumulated 15 key passes.

The 24-year-old has suffered something of a dip in form this season, however, Bilbao are likely to hold out until United match his buyout clause of £36million.

Antoine Griezmann

4 of 5

Manchester United are ready to step up their interest in Real Sociedad’s Antoine Griezmann according to Charles Perrin, of the Express.

The 22-year-old, who has a £25 million buyout clause, is contracted with the La Liga outfit until 2016. However, he has been courted by a number of clubs in the past few months, including Barcelona.

Griezmann has scored eight goals in 11 appearances for the Spaniards so far this campaign, and he has posed a huge threat out-wide throughout the entire season.

He would be a brilliant addition for the Red Devils, who have lacked quality on the wings under David Moyes. His pace and skill out-wide would bring a new dimension to the club’s attack, traits that could propel the team to Premier League success.

Koke

5 of 5

The 21-year-old dubbed as the ‘new Xavi of Spanish football,’ could feature at the top of United’s January wish list.

According to the Daily Mirror, the Old Trafford outfit are ready to revive their interest in Koke by launching a bid for the player during the winter window.

In 13 appearances for Atletico Madrid this season, he has scored twice and assisted seven goals from 23 key passes. Having established himself at the heart of the club’s midfield, he has been an impressive, creative force.

Koke has bags of potential and he would be a fantastic signing for the Red Devils. Whether a transfer is possible is another question altogether.
