Davis Cup Final 2013: Highlighting Event's Top Competitors on Each Side

Andrew GouldJun 5, 2018

The Czech Republic will look to claim its second straight Davis Cup championship by defeating Serbia in the Belgrade Arena.

Three more matches remain when these nations take to the hard courts during the Final's remaining two days. While Serbia' Novak Djokovic leads the pack as the event's top attraction, he does not stand alone in the prestigious men's tennis tournament.

Each match will delve down to a best-of-five battles between two countries that met in last year's semifinals, which saw Czech take the 3-2 edge en route to their title victory. Here are the players who will sway the rematch's outcome.

Serbia

Novak Djokovic

Who else but one of the world's best?

The 26-year-old has already won six singles titles this year, which is just a normal number for his standards. He has not lost a match since falling to arch nemesis Rafael Nadal in the U.S. Open finals in September.

Djokovic started the weekend off right for Serbia by topping Radek Stapanek in three sets (7-5, 6-1, 6-4). Expect captain Bogdan Obradovic to turn to his star again on Sunday to deliver another singles victory.

Ilija Bozoljac and Nenad Zimonjic

Ilija Bozoljac and Nenad Zimonjic will unite to guide Serbia to success in doubles play on Saturday.

The unknown and unranked Bozoljac joined forces with the former top-ranked Zimonjic to upset Americans Mike and Bob Ryan earlier in the tournament.

United States' club captain was surprised by Bozoljac's rousing effort, as he told USA Today's Douglas Robson.

"If he was Novak Djokovic, you would say, 'Maybe.' Not a guy where he's ranked. The ball doesn't know what ranking is. The ball just knows where it goes. It was some incredible tennis."

If the duo continues to work well together, the Czech Republic will have a tough path ahead of it on Sunday.

Czech Republic

Tomas Berdych

The pressure will largely be inserted on Tomas Berdych's shoulders as the Czech Republic attempts to fight off Djokovic's crew.

On Friday, men's tennis No. 7 player downed Dusan Lajovic, who replaced the injured Janko Tipsarevic. Topping a young player in over his head is one thing, but Berdych could very well be tasked to beat Djokovic on the Final's last leg.

The 28-year-old recently lost to Rafael Nadal in the ATP World Tour Finals, but not before defeating David Ferrer. Another big victory could be necessary for his country to defend its crown.

But before delving down that path, a late switch could cause Berdych to team up with Stapanek on Saturday in a doubles bout that could serve as the tilt's turning point. The duo have won 13 of 14 Davis Cup rubbers since 2007.

Lukas Rosol

Beating Rafael Nadal puts you on the map.

Lukas Rosol achieved notoriety by stunning Nadal in 2012's Wimbledon during the tournament's second round, setting the star home surprisingly early.

He remained on the sidelines during last year's Davis Cup Final, but he is currently tabbed to team up with Jan Hajek on Saturday. If Berdych and Stapanek don't play instead, the world's No. 47 player will be largely responsible for giving the Czechs the upper hand.

A career 23-41 on hard courts, Rosol could put him in the public limelight again by helping his country soar to another Davis Cup championship.
