Transfer Rumours: Reported Man Utd Target Andres Iniesta Going Nowhere

Christopher HeathmanJun 7, 2018

Recent reports in England have suggested Manchester United are targeting Barcelona's Andres Iniesta in January. It would be a sensational move, but noise from the Spanish media is indicating this fantasy move is exactly that. A fantasy.

Catalan 'paper 'Sport' have reported Iniesta will sign his new deal in December, ending any ridiculous hopes held by Man Utd fans.

The Spanish-based outlet have also said Iniesta does not want to be linked with other teams, and that both parties want to renew the midfielder's contract in the next month.

The world cup winner's current deal will keep him at the club until 2015, but the extension would be until 2017. If and when Iniesta does sign, it is likely to be his last big contract at Barcelona, but it is expected he will very well paid.

The deal will make him the second-highest paid player in Barca's ranks, alongside Xavi but behind Lionel Messi.

The contract saga has being rumbling on since September, when his representatives reportedly rejected an initial offer, according to ESPN FC. Despite the stumbling block, Iniesta maintained he wanted to finish his career at the Nou Camp.

He told AS: “My dream, my wish, is to end my career here. That is my intention, and the club wants the same. We will reach an agreement. There is nothing strange going on."

As for Man Utd, it will be of small comfort, but at least they are looking in the right areas. After failing on three attempts last transfer window to bring in a midfielder, it looks like manager David Moyes is determined to fill the void.

The midfield will be even more of a priority after Michael Carrick's recent injury, which will keep him out for six weeks, means the former Everton man is short of options in the run up to Christmas.

However, fans will probably want to hear more solid transfer targets if they are to be reassured of the club's chances of finishing in the top 4, and maybe even challenging for the title.
