A Hope For The Return Of Vince Young: A Forgotten Hero

Al WadeMay 26, 2009

At the kickoff of the 2009 season started so did the NFL's Free Agency, someone was going to retire unless being resigned and named starter.

Kerry Collins is this man, and the team who had to make the decision was Tennessee. But most of you already know this story, its the one that is under it that I'm getting out.

With the resigning of Kerry Collins, Houston's hero Vince Young was once again undermined. Something that doesn't make any sense when they had said he need to be more stronger mentally. How would that help the situation?

Vince is the man who beat Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush in the BCS championship. In his 2006 rookie campaign, he did so good he was put on the cover of the Madden video game(cursed), and was named NFL Rookie of the Year in 2006. In '07 he put his team one game away form the playoffs, and improved his passer rating. Even while being cursed. Everything was pointing up.

Then rumors got out that he had contemplated retiring during his rookie year. When the 2008 season started he was at the helm. Then, in the first game of the season he was knocked out with an injury. But he came back in after being yelled at for not being a good enough leader, and made the injury worse, but they won the game. After the game they found out he would be out for the next four weeks.

Something in him broke down, he shut himself off to the outside world and his team and family feared that he was depressed and could hurt himself. After a two day media circus, he came out only to find that he was being benched, even when he healed from his injury.

Kerry Collins had taken his spot. This is the same guy who just two years before had started the first four games and had thrown 1 TD to 6 INT's. I questioned the move the first time I heard it, and I'm still questioning it now even though they went 13-3.

Why take a potentional superstar for a career backup/journeyman?

Vince Young has shown he can be clutch. Remember the Titans-Texans game where he ran for a touchdown from around the 50 in the closing seconds? That game showed me that he has what it take to make it in this league. If he doesn't have the field vision then he has the legs to make up for it. His touchdown to turnover ratio, 32-35. That's better then a lot of QBs in basically 2 years(29 games less the 2 whole seasons).

Give him some growing room. You switch him for a man who is 13-13 for that ratio in the same span. Who has 20 games under his belt.

I guess what I'm trying to get to is that Vince Young should've been the man last year, and should be this year. Vince Young not only belongs in the NFL, he belongs in Tennessee's "Drivers seat". They need a play maker to make up for Haynesworth's absence. With Vince, they get two because Crumpler would return to form. You could add in Scaife too because of the familiarity.
