With The Second Pick In The 2010 NFL Draft The Seattle Seahawks Select...

NFL News And RumorsMay 26, 2009

Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma.

Now, I don’t for a second think that the Seahawks will finish with the league's second worst record. I have the expectation Seattle will be winning the NFC West for the fifth time in six seasons.

Thanks to a robbery of the Denver Broncos' 2010 first round pick, Seattle now has the ability to trade up for Bradford, or pluck Texas QB Colt McCoy as the franchise QB in the 2010 Draft. The addition of either would make the transition from the Hasselbeck era seamless.

The Seahawks would probably have to trade up to get Bradford, likely all the way up to No. 1 or No. 2.

Maybe Denver’s defense is a 2008 clone, ranking near the bottom in every category. Maybe presumed starting QB Kyle Orton does not pan out.

A pandemic, or in today’s case, swine flu, could wipe out the Bronco’s RB corps, again.

Any number of things could happen that could yield the Seahawks a top 10 pick, in addition to their own.

And vice versa of course, Seattle is no stranger to the injury plague. Another outbreak of 2008 would certainly guarantee them another top 10 pick

The potential for Denver’s pick to be high is not out of the question. Seahawks fans will certainly be keeping an eye on Denver throughout the season. All will be praying for losses just like we did when we were part of the AFC West.

In a draft loaded with star power QBs such as the aforementioned Bradford, Florida’s Tim Tebow, and Texas’ Colt McCoy, the Seahawks could have their fill of Tebow or McCoy.

Head coach Jim Mora is no stranger to succeeding with mobile, left-handed QBs. The ability to trade up and draft a sure-fire franchise type QB like Bradford is something Seahawks fans will be speculating heavily about.

Hometown O’Dea product S Taylor Mays could be had as well. It’s too early for intense speculation, but the recent trade gives the Seahawks a lot of options to literally choose whoever they want in 2010. If the Seahawks fail to land either of the top QBs, Mays is not a bad consolation prize.

The Seahawks already landed three potential starters in LB Aaron Curry, C Max Unger, and WR Deon Butler via this year’s draft. Dwarfing those additions would be something

The latter, Butler, can be a dynamic force in the offense, and in kick return, giving Nate Burleson more reason to stay healthy. His 4.32 combine speed gives Seattle a pure blazing element they have not had around for a while.

With all of Seattle’s upgrades in the offseason, they are poised to tackle the OL, S, and QB positions next season.

The future all of a sudden looks bright; the umbrella of the 2005 disappointment can be let down, the Seahawks are bound for a new era. The window that appeared to have closed after 2005 is now opening back up again.

In 2010, we can pair Deon Grant with a bright young stud like Mats and begin to look for our QB of the future—while still having the luxury of the one-two punch at QB with Matt Hasselbeck and Seneca Wallace on the roster.

With the draft over and the free agency buzz to a minimum, we will all begin to focus on other aspects of the NFL.

When we get near draft day 2010, the buzz around Seattle for Sam Bradford will be even greater than the intrigue surrounding Mark Sanchez.

Why should they let their offseason success story stop now, carry it on for years to come. Go get your franchise QB boys.
