Mark Sanchez: Another USC Softy?
It might seem innocent enough and many men might jump at the chance to pose with attractive female models in GQ magazine.
But, let's be serious, should New York Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez have taken that opportunity this early in his career?
There is nothing inherently wrong with the “Baywatch like” photo spread (which also looks like an advertisement for six minute abs) that Sanchez did.
I am sure fellow teammates gave the rookie an earful for, but does it reinforce the criticism USC receives for producing “soft” quarterbacks?
Former USC QB Matt Leinart, despite his great college career, has certainly endured his share of flack for not being the tough and gritty quarterback that many other premier universities have given the NFL.
USC is largely a finesse team offensively, but finesse is not what the Jets need. They need a hard-nosed quarterback that can lead them to where they have not been since Namath was at the helm. Mark Sanchez has put himself in a position to be given the same label of another “softy” from USC.
Given the critical and unforgiving nature of the New York media and fan base, perhaps it would have been wise for Sanchez to lay low and let his performance on the field be all the criticism he subjects himself to.
The New York media and the New York Jets’ fans will be all over him the minute he throws his first interception. His participation in the photo shoot and perceived lack of focus will undoubtedly be a source of the blame for any poor play on the field.
All one needs to do is look at the bashing Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo took for going on vacation with Jessica Simpson two years ago and they will know what awaits Mark Sanchez.
Mark Sanchez already has the difficult task of providing the green and white shirts with stability at the quarterback position.
Sanchez has inadvertently set himself up for unnecessary scrutiny and ridicule.
He should have done himself a favor by making his New York debut on the field instead of in GQ magazine.
