The Denver Broncos escaped San Diego with a narrow 28-20 victory, despite the Chargers erasing a 22-point deficit in the second half.
Peyton Manning threw for 330 yards and four touchdowns, while Demaryius Thomas finished with 108 yards on seven catches for three touchdowns. Julius Thomas got in on the action with 96 yards receiving and a touchdown.
The Broncos jumped out to a 21-6 lead at halftime after Manning connected on two scores to Demaryius Thomas and a 74-yard score to Julius Thomas to open the game. Demaryius Thomas added his third score in the third quarter on a 34-yard catch and the Broncos held off a late surge by the Chargers to pick up their eighth win of the season and their first under interim head coach Jack Del Rio.
Philip Rivers threw for 218 yards with one touchdown and Ryan Mathews rushed for 59 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown. Antonio Gates caught four balls for 62 yards and Danny Woodhead had a receiving touchdown to go along with 27 yards rushing and 17 yards receiving.
The Chargers were held to two field goals in the first half, but back-to-back scores down the stretch from Woodhead and Mathews pulled them within eight points. San Diego's defense forced three straight punts in the second half, but the offense could not turn its last drive of the game into points.
