Alberto Del Rio Belongs on Midcard After Lackluster World Title Reign

Justin LaBarJun 3, 2018

Alberto Del Rio is a good performer, but he's not main event material.

WWE has tried, they tried again and I believe they tried one more time. He was a heel, then a face, and back to a heel. Everything has been average.

He's been booked as a modern day Ric Flair, but it's flopped. Del Rio has a similar character with the rich, first-class and big-talk attitude. Flair could lose every night, but he would come back and spin the story of what happen. He would run his mouth, make excuses and would be as credible/profitable of a heel as ever.

This isn't an easy thing to do, and Del Rio certainly can't pull it off.

Del Rio hasn't beaten anyone that the audience considers better than him. He doesn't have Flair's charisma and connection with the audience to get away with continuing to lose.

In a short span in his WWE career, we've seen him come up short many times on pay-per-view in title matches against John Cena or CM Punk. After those instances, it's hard for him to bounce back. There is no real credibility in him.

They tried erasing all of that with a babyface run. I liked the setup of the political rants from Zeb Colter and Jack Swagger provoking Del Rio. The story was good on paper but didn't pan out on television. Fans didn't buy it, so the face run ended quickly.

Del Rio can have really good matches. He's what they would say in the business is a solid hand to have in your locker room. An experienced guy who can work with anybody in the ring.

The middle of the card could use a reliable heel, and the main event isn't going to miss him.

In WWE, you're either at the very bottom of importance or it's the top of the card. There is no depth and substance in the middle of the card. There are a bunch of young talented guys, but veterans are needed to help propel those talents.

Del Rio didn't do well in the main event scene, but he did find himself in a lot of matches with Punk, Cena and even Edge. That could be enough to make him seem important when working with a guy like Big E Langston.

The story can be sold that Del Rio has the family history of wrestling in his blood being a second-generation star. It can be sold that he's been in the ring with some of the best. It will make his losing in the midcard, if built correctly, more valuable than anything he's done up to this point.

At this point, if Ricardo Rodriguez is, in fact, going to be brought back to the main roster as a wrestler, put him against Del Rio. There is an easy history and story to tell. Fans would genuinely want to see Rodriguez get his licks in on Del Rio after so many years of playing servant.

Rodriguez the announcer was always more favored over Del Rio the “main event” wrestler. That should sum up the entire argument of Del Rio remaining in title matches.
