Gayle Benson Rescues Engagement Ring of Jets Beat Writer Kimberley Martin

Jesse ReedJun 8, 2018

Kimberley A. Martin has a new best friend after the New York Jets' Week 9 game, as Gayle Benson, who is the wife of New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson, found her engagement ring in MetLife Stadium's press box ladies room.

Benson found the ring on the counter in the restroom, realized it was likely an engagement ring and took the time and effort to hand the ring over to stadium security, as noted by Bob Glauber of Newsday

By the time Martin realized she wasn't wearing her ring, she was in the midst of doing player interviews in the Jets locker room. She had set the ring on the bathroom counter while washing her hands and forgot to pick it up before heading back to work.

Benson was happy to help, as Glauber reported, and she offered some sage words of advice for Marti.

"I am so happy she has her ring. So happy I saw it on the counter. I suspected it was an engagement ring. Very beautiful. Many blessings and always keep your ring on. Better to get soap on it than lose it."

Jane McManus of ESPNNewYork.com offered another option for Martin to consider in the future—albeit one of the tongue-and-cheek variety:

Martin is engaged to Bergen Record sportswriter Jeffrey Roberts, and she was understandably effusive in her thanks, per Glauber.

"I am so touched that Mrs. Benson found the ring and was able to get it back to me. You have no idea what it means to me to have it back. I'm incredibly grateful."

Benson's simple act of kindness saved Martin from a terrifying scenario.

Losing something as precious—both sentimentally and literally—as an engagement ring is something nobody wants to experience. Thankfully, Martin didn't have to wait long to reconnect with hers.

Though the Saints lost the game, perhaps Benson's actions will indirectly have a positive effect on the franchise going forward. At 6-2, New Orleans is still atop the NFC South by one game over the Carolina Panthers, and the team is in excellent shape for a deep playoff run. A little good karma can't hurt.
