Breeders' Cup 2013: Full Schedule and Horses to Watch for Saturday's Card

Tim DanielsNov 1, 2013

Although the Breeders' Cup doesn't generate the same type of hype as the Triple Crown, the overall quality of the racing is much higher. The top horses in each division battle over the course of two days for some of the year's biggest purses.

Since there are so many talented horses in each race, handicapping becomes more difficult. The difference between the top four or five contenders in each race is usually minimal, which means it all comes down to what type of form they show on race day.

At the same time, that's what also makes the Breeders' Cup interesting and unique. So let's take a look at the complete slate of elite races for Saturday, followed by a closer look at some the top horses that will be in action.

Top Horses to Watch

Game On Dude (Classic)

Game On Dude is making his third straight appearance in the Classic. Last year, he garnered a lot of attention heading into the Breeders' Cup after tallying three wins and a second-place finish in four starts leading up to the race.

He proceeded to finish a distance seventh, a disappointment based both on those promising results and his second-place run in the 2011 Classic. Fast forward 12 months and the veteran gelding is right back in the spotlight.

That's because Game On Dude has made six starts since last year's Classic and he won all of them. The streak features a trio of Grade 1 races, including the Pacific Classic his last time out. He finally seems ready for his Classic breakthrough.

Wise Dan (Mile)

One month ago, Wise Dan would have been viewed as virtually unbeatable heading into the Mile. He was riding a nine-race winning streak and was completely dominant in the race last year, setting a new course record by breaking the 1:32 mark.

But the streak and Wise Dan's aura of invincibility came to an end in the Shadwell Turf Mile last month at Keeneland thanks to Silver Max, who is also in the Breeders' Cup field. He didn't have the final kick he's shown so often throughout his career and finished second.

Make no mistake, Wise Dan should still be viewed as the favorite heading into the rematch with Silver Max, and a strong group of other contenders. He's just not the lock it appeared he was going to be during his long winning streak.

Groupie Doll (Filly and Mare Sprint)

Groupie Doll's story is almost the direct opposite of Game On Dude. After winning the Filly and Mare Sprint last year, she's struggled to find top form. In four races, only one of which was a Grade 1, her only win came in the Grade 2 Presque Isle Masters.

She hasn't dropped off completely, though. The once unstoppable mare has finished in the money all four times since her Breeders' Cup triumph last year. The winner's circle has been elusive, however, and the field on Saturday will present a tough challenge.

Perhaps a return to Santa Anita Park, which is hosting the event for the second straight year, will be exactly what Groupie Doll needs to rediscover the magic. Otherwise, she'll have a tough time breaking the top three again.
