NBA 2K14: New My Team Image Shows off New Design and Challenge
Per Ronnie Singh of 2K Sports, fans can expect a new update on the next-generation version of NBA 2K14 at 1 p.m. and/or 7 p.m. ET every day until launch on Nov. 15. Many hardcore fans of the series will have their eyes and ears peeled for social media at those times to learn the latest news on the series.
On Thursday, the first screenshot of My Team was released.
A few details immediately jump out when you see the image above. First, 2K Sports has replaced the figurine representation of each player with cards. Obviously, My Team functions very much like EA Sports' Ultimate Team.
UT uses cards for each of the series the mode is used with, so My Team's new design more closely resembles its competitor's concept. Truthfully, cards work much better than any other representation in this type of a mode.
The design allows for the use of real NBA photos, and since the concept is a mixture of fantasy sports and sports collectibles, using cards is the format that resonates most with fans. We'll have to wait and see what—if any—information is displayed on the backs of the cards.
Secondly, Singh challenges fans to collect every card for every player in the "Association."
These modes are partly about completing sets, so it would appear that finishing one collection would involve obtaining the card of every player in the NBA. This will have gamers holding on to marginal players just to complete the task.
It will certainly keep fans engaged in their quest to obtain each card, but the success of the mode will be dictated by the features that affect the actual games.
The current-generation version allowed gamers to play any real NBA team's schedule with their My Team roster. It also had cool tournaments with tiered-player restrictions that helped to level the playing field.
If you only had bronze-level players, you could compete in a tournament against other gamers who had a similar roster. This way, you weren't getting destroyed by gamers who simply had more time to earn virtual currency and stack their teams.
We'll see how this all comes together. NBA 2K14 on next-gen will undoubtedly deliver the eye candy and solid gameplay. If modes like My Team are delivered correctly, the game will be a complete success.
