Breeders' Cup 2013: Full List of Odds for All Horses in Classic Lineup

Jun 8, 2018

It may not be a Triple Crown event, but the Breeders' Cup from sunny Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., has the highest stakes of all.

Although a series of 14 races, this is especially the case for the final race, otherwise known as the Classic—an impressive showdown featuring the best talent the sport has to offer in a 12-horse race for a $5 million purse.

The lucrative endeavor features names that fans of the sport will surely remember from previous festivities, as they battle for a prize larger than that of the Triple Crown races combined.

Declaration Of War

If there were weight classes in the Breeders' Cup, Declaration Of War would enter as a heavyweight.

On his career, Declaration Of War has made 12 starts, finished in first seven times and finished in the top three nine times overall while accumulating a total earnings tally of over $1.3 million.

The combo of Joseph O'Brien as jockey and his father Aidan O'Brien as trainer is no surprise, and the young rider has experienced great success this year after being named the Irish Jockey Champion in 2012.

This year Joseph broke a 20-year-old record with a treble at Navan as illustrated by RTE Racing:

When examining odds, the hot hand is typically the way to go. It does not get much hotter than the O'Briens and Declaration Of War.

Mucho Macho Man

Then again, experience is a way to go, too.

Mucho Macho Man finished only behind Fort Larned last year in the Breeders' Cup Classic, and paired with his odds that makes him and jockey Gary Stevens a safe bet.

Stevens is the definition of a veteran, and perhaps a legend with 27,000 starts to his name—over 4,000 of those have been first-place finishes, giving him a grand total of over $227 million in earnings.

Mucho Macho Man came in second last year, but also won one of his four starts this season, which was at Santa Anita Park.

If it sounds like the perfect combination of jockey, horse, experience and momentum, that's because it is. The odds are favorable, but the position is not. Sometimes obvious is not a horrible bet at all.

Palace Malice

The three-year-old colt known as Palace Malice is not as inexperienced as his age would suggest, especially after a big win at the 2013 Belmont Stakes.

Overall, Palace Malice has made 11 career starts and wound up in the top three in eight with already over $1.4 million to his name.

Jockey John Velazquez is the perfect veteran complement to the young horse with over 28,000 starts to his name, over 5,000 first-place finishes and a heavy purse well over $298 million.

Despite the Classic being his 10th start of the season, Palace Malice is on fresh legs at such a young age and has already proven to be a winner in critical scenarios, not to mention perhaps the next big thing in the sport.

Not exactly a bad bet at the current odds.
