Paris Masters 2013: Recap and Results from Tuesday's Men's Singles Play

Richard LangfordOct 29, 2013

After winning the first set, 6-1, in his second-round match at the Paris Masters on Tuesday, eighth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga dropped the next two sets in tiebreakers and fell to Kei Nishikori, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (9-7).

Wilfried-Tsonga was the only seeded player to lose on Tuesday.

Tsonga was serving to win the match in the third set, and he double faulted. That was one of eight double faults for the Frenchman on the day.

No. 14 Jerzy Janowicz def. Santiago Giraldo; 7-6 (7-3), 6-3

Novak Djokovic Survives First-Set Scare

Second-seeded Novak Djokovic won in straight sets on Tuesday over Pierre-Hugues Herbert. That was no surprise. However, Djokovic had to work for that win.

It took one hour and 33 minutes for Djokovic to earn a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win.

Herbet used a strong first serve to stay in contention. He ended the match with nine aces while landing 67 percent of his first serves. He won 67 percent of those points. That is no small accomplishment against the elite return of Nole.

Meanwhile, Djokovic was also dialed in with his first serve. He landed 62 percent of them successfully and won 82 percent of those points.

Richard Gasquet Wins Tight Three-Set Match

Richard Gasquet had to expend some serious energy to dispatch of Fernando Verdasco.

The ninth-seeded Gasquet won the first set 7-5, only to see Verdasco battle back and take an entertaining tiebreak in the second. Gasquet then cruised to a 6-3 win in the deciding set.

Verdasco did a nice job of connecting on 71 percent of his first serves. However, he won just 48 percent of his second-serve points and picked up 11 double faults.

Jerzy Janowicz Wins in Straight Sets

Santiago Giraldo was able to extend 14th-seeded Jerzy Janowicz to a tiebreak in the first set. However, Janowicz was able to take the tiebreak 7-3 and then rolled, 6-3, in the second.

Janowicz was able to pick up eight aces in this match. However, he also had nine double faults.

Still, he was good when he needed to be. He denied Giraldo on three of four break points on the day.
