WWE Hell in a Cell 2013: Smart Matches That Would Excite Fans

Erik BeastonOct 16, 2013

The 2013 Hell in a Cell pay-per-view is just over a week away, and the top three matches on the card have been announced.

Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton will attempt to rescue the WWE Championship from the dastardly abeyance as they do battle inside Hell in a Cell. Shawn Michaels will serve as the referee in that bout, assuring an entertaining finish.

John Cena makes his triumphant return, complete with video packages and all, after a two month absence following triceps surgery. He will challenge Alberto Del Rio for the World Heavyweight Championship in a match that the champion has very little chance to actually win.

As announced on the Oct. 14 episode of Raw, CM Punk will take on Ryback and Paul Heyman in a two-on-one, handicap Hell in a Cell match.

With those three matches guaranteed to take up the bulk of the show, there are plenty of spots on the undercard for matches that will excite fans and help make the much maligned Battleground pay-per-view a distant, albeit unpleasant, memory.

As we countdown the days until the second major event of October, here is a look at the a few smart matches WWE could add to the card and please their audience.

The Big Show, Cody Rhodes and Goldust vs. The Shield

The Big Show, Cody Rhodes and Goldust have found themselves the consistent targets of COO Triple H and wife Stephanie McMahon's wrath, dating all the way back to the beginning of September.

They have been manipulated, humiliated and fired by the power couple but, recently, have repaid Triple H and Stephanie for the torment they suffered.

First, Rhodes and Goldust defeated Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins to earn back their jobs with World Wrestling Entertainment at Battleground.

The following night, Big Show reached his boiling point and, after being relieved of his duties as a WWE Superstar by Stephanie, returned to the building and knocked out Triple H.

Then, on the Oct. 14 episode of Raw, Big Show aided Rhodes and Goldust in defeating Reigns and Rollins in a No Disqualification Match for the WWE Tag Team Championship.

All three have caused a great deal of stress to Triple H in recent weeks and have proven that, if they work together, McMahon-family henchmen The Shield are no match for them.

What better way to bring the Rhodes family drama and the Big Show's plight over the last two months together than in a match that would definitely have the fans emotionally invested?

A six-man tag match involving the three heroes and the hated Shield would not only excite fans, it would also have the opportunity to steal the show.

Rhodes, Goldust, Reigns and Rollins have demonstrated outstanding chemistry in their two bouts thus far, and Big Show has surprisingly become one of the most over babyfaces on the roster. Add in the highly talented Dean Ambrose, and the recipe is there for an outstanding match.

Los Matadores vs. The Real Americans

Los Matadores have as bad a gimmick as WWE has produced in years.

With that said, they are over right now, and a feud with Jack Swagger and Antonio Cesaro, the Real Americans, writes itself.

In recent weeks, Real Americans manager Zeb Colter has referred to the masked newcomers as "Los Illegals" and repeatedly questioned why they are in WWE.

All Fernando and Diego have done in response is win.

Speaking of winning, Cesaro and Swagger have been on quite the roll of late, thanks in large part to the former's unrivaled display of strength known as the Giant Swing, a move that is rapidly becoming one of the most popular in WWE. The move has set up a number of victories for the Real Americans in recent weeks, and Cesaro would undoubtedly love to swing one of Los Matadores into the third row.

Fernando and Diego, previously known as Epico and Primo, have a fast-paced, high-flying offensive move set that will mesh well with Cesaro and Swagger's style of ground and pound offense.

If Los Matadores are allowed to expand upon what fans have seen in their limited enhancement matches against 3MB, a match against the Real Americans could not only excite fans, it could also win over the gimmick's harshest critics.

Brie Bella vs. AJ Lee

It is difficult to make the argument that a match that happened on a critically panned pay-per-view just under three weeks ago can excite fans, but there is still life left in the Brie Bella-AJ Lee angle.

In recent weeks, Brie has improved her in-ring work considerably, as evidenced by her match with AJ at Battleground and her excellent bout against Tamina on Monday's Raw.

She has also seen her on-screen presence grow, becoming an integral part of the Daniel Bryan-Randy Orton saga.

AJ, on the other hand, remains the most popular female performer in WWE and one of the Divas Division's best workers. She also has the ability to talk and to keep otherwise uninteresting feuds relevant.

A match between her and Brie would already be fitting given AJ's attack on the twin following Monday's match with Tamina, which saw the Divas champion apply the Black Widow until officials had to pull her off.

Add to it the stipulation that Tamina and Nikki Bella would be barred from ringside, and it would allow for a definitive conclusion to the program and a highlight for the Total Divas show

Kofi Kingston & The Miz vs. Luke Harper & Erick Rowan

As reported by F4WOnline.com, Bray Wyatt suffered a deep thigh bruise over the weekend at a live event and will be sidelined for four weeks.

That ends any chance of a match against The Miz, which had been teased on Raw.

It does, however, open up Luke Harper and Erick Rowan to earn a pay-per-view paycheck in tag action.

The duo has been a bit underwhelming in terms of their in-ring work thus far, but they have a tremendous presence about them and remain very over with the WWE Universe.

What better way to mask their one weakness than by putting them in the ring with two of the more talented midcard performers on the roster?

Both The Miz and Kofi Kingston have history with the Wyatt Family. Kofi was on the receiving end of the Bray Wyatt beat-down at Battleground, and for some reason, The Miz has found himself the object of their attention in recent weeks.

The match would provide a logical continuation of the angle involving Miz and would also satisfy fans of the Wyatts.

The only person with nothing to gain from the match is Kofi, and considering the lack of attention paid to him by creative recently, that is not surprising.
