Mike Francesa: King of Arrogant Radio
Over the past 20-plus years or so, Mike Francesa has been putting down his fans about as much as he's been putting down twinkies and hot dogs.
He is the "largest" radio personality in New York, both figuratively and literally. He's also possibly the most arrogant and boring radio personality in New York. If I had a desire to listen to someone constantly berate, talk down, and cut people off I would be the biggest Francesca fan in the world.
Oh, and did I mention CONSTANTLY repeat himself? The average fan call in usually goes something like this:
Francesa: Steve in Brooklyn you're on the WFAN.
Caller: Hey Mike, long time fan, love listeni...
Francesa: Yes, that's great what would you like to talk about?
Caller: Well Mike I just wanted to talk about the Yankees bullpen and maybe using Phil Coke as a...(Francesca hangs up)
Francesa: Phil Coke?? You wanna call me to talk about Phil Coke?? I mean c'mon people, it's 25 games into the season and you want to act like the sky is falling. Phil Coke?? Jeeez I mean what do they have to do to make you people happy?
Yea, Phil Coke is good but I mean c'mon, we're 25 games into the season and you wanna call in and talk about Phil Coke and the Yankees Bullpen? (Long Pause) You're right though Phil Coke is good, but c'mon people let's give it some time here.
Now that was obviously a bit of an exaggeration but nonetheless Francesa rarely let's his callers finish their thoughts, and basically never agrees with them. Now I'm not saying you have to agree with every caller, but it becomes almost a comedy routine when Francesa disagrees over something then contradicts himself not even a week later.
I literally heard Francesa talking about the Plaxico Burress shooting, when a caller informed him of a hotline that players can call into in order to obtain security for a night. Mostly ex-police officers, this is a real service that the NFL provides to their players.
Francesca immediately cuts off the caller and says, "That's not true, there's nothing like that I don't believe that."
Of course the caller was correct but was hung up on and could not speak over "the voice", but it was just another example of how even when he's 100 percent wrong he will go about his business like his words are the words of God. I haven't even spoken about the "My friend Bill Parcells" references...
Hopefully with his ratings suffering we will see the end of the Mike Francesca Show sooner rather than later.
All we can do is pray that someday somebody puts him in his place and embarrasses him the way he embarrasses his guests, co-hosts, and fans. I only wish I could get through to the station myself, but the line is always busy with his butt-kissing following.
