NFL Picks Week 6: Underdogs Who Will Cover the Spread

R. Cory SmithOct 10, 2013

Week six in the NFL features several savory matchups and even one blowout that ties a record between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Denver Broncos.

While that line has grabbed plenty of attention this week, there are several others that look like easy picks but final results might be surprising. Here are a few surprise picks for week six in the NFL.

Cleveland Browns (+3 vs Detroit Lions)

Starting with the least sexy pick of the week, the Cleveland Browns should cover the spread against the Detroit Lions. After losing Calvin Johnson last week, Megatron looks like he will be a game time decision, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press:

If Johnson does start on Sunday, this line could likely open up. The return of Brandon Weeden seems like much less of a glimmer of hope as it might have earlier in the year with Brian Hoyer performing better than expected before tearing his ACL.

How's this for a fact: The Browns have yet to lose a game or not cover the spread since the return of receiver Josh Gordon in Week 3. Now combined with a healthy Weeden and a somewhat-resurgent Willis McGahee -- take that however you want -- the Browns will likely move to four straight covers.

San Francisco 49ers (-10.5 vs Arizona Cardinals)

The Cardinals may be 3-2 heading into Candlestick Park, but they are still a very weak team that struggles to move the ball offensively. Even against a porous 49ers defense that is missing Aldon Smith and Patrick Willis still listed as questionable, Carson Palmer will still likely find a way to turn the ball over -- Palmer averages 2.2 turnovers per game.

Don't expect Frank Gore or Colin Kaepernick to to run roughshod over the Cardinals 6th ranked rushing defense, but plan to see a heavy dose of passing from Kaepernick against the 22nd overall passing defense. San Francisco blew out the Houston Texans defense for 34 points last week and will look to have a repeat performance to move to 2-1 in the NFC West.

Green Bay Packers (-3 at Baltimore Ravens)

Here's the difficult pick of the weekend. The Baltimore Ravens are not what they used to be defensively. Are they still able to stop the run? Yes, they are ranked 6th in the NFL in rushing yards allowed per game. Can they still stop the pass? No, and that's where the Green Bay Packers will exploit them.

Aaron Rodgers to Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, James Jones or Jermichael Finley might be something Ravens fans want to get used to hearing on Sunday. Green Bay finds ways to create mismatches in the passing game with three or four different receivers and is once again a top five passing attack.

The Ravens have shown they play well at home, going undefeated against the Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns, as well as improving in the running game with Ray Rice returning, but will have their hands full against the passing barrage the Packers use on a weekly basis.
