UCLA QB Drama

Cowan looks like he’s going to be the #1 guy although there hasn’t been an official announcement. Dohn had some other juicy tidbits in his article today:

"

One-third of the way through spring practice and UCLA already has its No. 1 quarterback.

Coach Rick Neuheisel on Saturday acknowledged the choice was Patrick Cowan.

Cowan was the only quarterback to work with the first-team offense during a lunchtime scrimmage. Former starter Ben Olson (Thousand Oaks High) worked with the second unit. One-third of the way through spring practice and UCLA already has its No. 1 quarterback.

Olson isn’t happy:“You would hope you would be given a chance,” Olson said. “You would hope they wouldn’t make up their minds after four days of spring practice. Again, I can’t control that. I have to stay positive and keep plowing through. But it doesn’t take a genius to figure out what’s going on.”

"

And Olson might be the 3rd string QB.

"

Olson declined to discuss whether he would look into transferring down to the level formerly known as Division I-AA after spring practice, but during the scrimmage sources said junior college transfer Kevin Craft is being lined up to beat out Olson for the backup job.

"

Wow. I’m feeling superbad for Ben right now, but he never had a chance in this offense. I wrote this on the Bro board a couple of hours ago:

"

Chow’s offense likes to run, but he utilizes a lot of dink and dunk passes to get the same effect as runs a LOT. It’s one of the main elements of his offense.

Olson isn’t nearly as good as Cowan at throwing short balls.

Olson isn’t nearly as mobile enough for a practically brand new offensive line.

It’s the same problem as before.

"

I guess thats the way its goign to be. When i get out of this research marathon I’ll have a bunch of writeups on spring practice. Stay tuned.
