Looking Back at Goldust and Cody Rhodes' Respective Tag Team Careers

Travis WakemanJun 6, 2018

This Sunday at WWE Battleground, Goldust will team with his brother Cody Rhodes to face Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns. If Rhodes and Goldust are victorious, they will be reinstated by WWE.

But in this high stakes matchup, a loss would mean Rhodes and Goldust never work for WWE again.

Though Cody and Goldust will be facing a team that has held the tag team titles since May, they have experienced much success as tag team wrestlers on their own.

Here is a look at the history of each member of the Rhodes family as tag team competitors.

Dustin and Dusty

Before he was known as Goldust, Dustin Rhodes broke onto the scene in WWE in late 1990 and at the Royal Rumble in January 1991, he teamed up with his legendary father to face Ted Dibiase and Virgil.

Though they lost the match, it was great experience for Dustin, who was just 21 years old at the time.

Dustin in WCW

Shortly after the loss at the Royal Rumble, Dustin went back to work for World Championship Wrestling. There, he formed solid tag teams with both Ricky Steamboat and Barry Windham.

He went on to win the tag team titles with both men, but each title reign was short lived.

Dustin then jumped into the singles ranks before resurfacing in WWE in 1995 as Goldust, one of the most interesting characters in WWE history.

Goldust and Booker T

Following a very successful run as a singles competitor, Goldust formed what was easily the most entertaining tag team he was ever part of—one with Booker T.

Not only were these two able to amass many victories inside the ring, they also put together some very funny segments outside the ring, showing great chemistry between them.

At WWE Armageddon in December 2002, Goldust and Booker T outlasted The Dudley Boyz, Lance Storm and William Regal and the team of Christian and Chris Jericho to win a tag team elimination match to win the World tag team titles.

Black Reign and Rellik

Dustin wound up working for TNA Wrestling in 2007 and 2008.

He changed his ring name to Black Reign and he soon aligned himself with a superstar known as Rellik.

TNA probably had much higher hopes for this team than they were able to achieve. Their most notable match took place at TNA Turning Point in December 2007.

Black Reign and Rellik took on Abyss and Raven in a Match of 10,000 tacks. Reign and Rellik lost the match.

Other Partners

Over his long and storied career, Dustin has worked with many different tag team partners including the diminutive Hornswoggle.

The last partner Goldust won a match with in WWE was Yoshi Tatsu, whom he teamed with in WWE's version of ECW in 2010.

Cody Rhodes and Hardcore Holly

Cody Rhodes' WWE career began in the summer of 2007 and after several matches to introduce him to viewers, Cody began a feud with Hardcore Holly.

Holly would defeat Rhodes three times in a row but it was the competitive spirit Cody brought to those matches that convinced the veteran Holly to take him under his wing.

The two became an accomplished tag team and in December of 2007, the two won the World tag team titles from the team of Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch.

The duo held onto the titles for over six months. Then, Cody decided to shock everyone at the Night of Champions event in June 2008.

Ted Dibiase had been promising a mystery partner for the event so they could challenge Rhodes and Holly. Instead, Cody turned on his partner Holly, revealing himself as Dibiase's partner.

Cody and Ted

Cody and Ted became one of the best tag teams of their era.

They lost the titles to the team of John Cena and Batista but the very next week on Monday Night Raw, they were able to take them right back. Eventually, the tandem of CM Punk and Kofi Kingston was able to wrest the titles away.

Not long after, Cody and Ted hooked up with Randy Orton to form the group known as Legacy.

For the most part, Cody and Ted did Orton's bidding and made him look good, but they were an excellent tag team.

That was never more evident than during a three-match series between them and D-Generation X, who had reformed in order to take on Legacy.

Rhodes and Dibiase found themselves in the ring with Triple H and Shawn Michaels at Summerslam in 2009. Though they lost the match, Rhodes and Dibiase had made a name for themselves.

The following month at WWE Breaking Point, Rhodes and Dibiase exacted some revenge against DX, defeating them in a submissions count anywhere match.

A third match was set up between the two teams to take place in October 2009 at WWE Hell in a Cell. Triple H and Michaels emerged victorious, but it wasn't without a huge fight from the young upstarts.

Cody and Drew McIntyre

After jumping over to the SmackDown brand in April 2010, Cody became known as "Dashing" Cody Rhodes. Soon after, a partnership formed with the equally-egotistical Drew McIntyre.

This team didn't last long, but they were able to became tag team champions together.

At Night of Champions, the team won a Tag Team Turmoil match to win the belts. They would hold them until October 2010, losing to the team of John Cena and David Otunga.

Rhodes Scholars

Most recently, Cody teamed with Damien Sandow, creatively naming their team Rhodes Scholars.

Rhodes and Sandow picked up numerous victories over teams like Sin Cara and Rey Mysterio and Primo and Epico. But they were never able to capture the titles together.

Despite having no less than four televised title matches against Team Hell No, Rhodes and Sandow were defeated each time.

In late January of 2013, the team decided to part ways, but that didn't last long. In a move that had to be confusing to viewers, the two teamed up several more times across 2013.

Of course, that came to a screeching halt at Money in the Bank where Sandow dashed Cody's hopes of winning the ladder match, only to pull the briefcase down himself.

Cody and Goldust

Despite a 16-year age difference, Cody and Dustin come from one of the most storied wrestling families in the history of the business.

Though Rollins and Reigns have been a dominant team, they will be facing one with everything to gain.

Without question, this will be one of the most intriguing matches on the card this Sunday.
