Boise State Bronco Defense: Marcel Yates Secondary Becoming Legendary

Lace BanachekMay 19, 2009

Boise State football has often been recognized for great offensive exploits. Watching BSU put 50 points on a foe is far from uncanny. In fact it has become expected and as such great quarterbacks line up if you will to have their shot to be the number one signal caller for the mighty Broncos of Boise State University.

But more than great quarterbacks have been coming to Boise State. High caliber athletes of all positions depart from the west coast and east coast, from Canada and even Europe and are making Boise State their choice for a great education and home field for their prospective football careers.

Indeed extremely talented young athletes are calling BSU their choice over some BCS conferences and many Pac 10 schools.

One such individual is Trevor Peterson, a brilliant young tight end who’s a recent signee from the 2009 commitments. Trevor chose Boise State over an Ivy League offer in order to play on the blue and further his education.

It will be fun watching him participate once he arrives this summer. Indeed the young Peterson will most likely red shirt this 09 season and then show off his abilities.

Yet, the biggest change to the football team is the powerful defensive secondary. The secondary just keeps getting better and better. That portion of the team is presently coached by former Bronco defensive back Marcel Yates (1996-1999).

Yates is entering his seventh season as a Bronco coach and is in his fourth season as coach to the whole secondary. Yates knows what it takes to excel in the secondary.

It was losing his knees that kept Marcel from stepping up to the next level of playing. As horrible as it sounds the Broncos are better for it. Yates has been a great coach and is a fine human being—and most importantly the players like him.

Many people solemnly believe that it is because of Marcel that Boise State is equally known for their hard hitting pass thieving secondary, as much as their offensive standouts.

Players like Kyle Wilson, Brandyn Thompson, Jeron Johnson, and George Iloka are but a sampling of the explosive defensive talent that will man the secondary of BSU this 09, and they all are improving under the watchful eye of Yates.

All of these players are physical as are some of their backups. Jason Robinson reserve defensive back is an extremely physical player and most likely will see some action along with Doug Martin in the nickel.

Cedric Febis, Garcia Day, and Jamar Taylor are a few more Bronco secondary reservist that will force offensive units into a continuous array of bad judgment calls.

Other than death and taxes there are two things one can count on at Boise State—those are quarterbacks and the defensive secondary will be as good as it gets.

Scheduled first to sample the "09" wares of the Boise State Broncos are the Oregon Ducks. Bronco fans have had their Duck pot simmering since the close of last season. They think it will be tastier batch than last years and Oh man wasn’t that good? Go Broncos!
