Memo to Denver: Why Exactly Is This an Issue for You?

Ron JohnsonMay 19, 2009

I shouldn't even have to write this article, but I will have to because it's the biggest topic of the final stretch of Summer.

Before I continue, allow me to say that if anyone in Denver has a problem with what's about to be said, feel free to come down to the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland and do something about it.

So what's the issue? Denver double booked Monday night...and it's bad.

Not showing any faith in his franchise, Stan Kroenke gave Monday, May 25 to World Wrestling Entertainment. Now the Nuggets have a chance to be in the NBA Finals if they can get past the Los Angeles Lakers and the Kobe Express.

Sounds great, right? Well WWE is coming to Denver this weekend with a show in Loveland on Sunday and RAW on Monday night.

So what's the problem? The Nuggets are scheduled to have Game Four on Monday Night...and WWE is scheduled to have RAW the same night.

Simple solution? Move the Western Conference Finals to an earlier time.

But there are those who feel that this is not the NBA's fault, or the Nuggets. They believe it's the WWE's fault.

But what the hell did the WWE do? WWE accepted the date, and Kroenke OK'd the day. Yet, here we are, just a few days away from the biggest Monday in the history of the city of Denver.

And no one is giving the fans answers...which we all deserve.

So the NBA is trying to put pressure on the WWE to move over and let them take center stage. Here's an idea David Stern: SIT DOWN AND SHUT THE HELL UP!

As intimidating as Stern wants to be, he is in no way shape or form intimidating. In all honesty, Vince McMahon can write a check to cover Stern's annual salary and still have enough for a private island in the Bahamas.

So should the WWE have to pack up and move to Colorado Springs? Absolutely not.

Should the NBA accomdate the double booking? You bet your ass they should.

In one night, about eight years ago, the Staples Center held two (yes, two) sporting events in one night.

Following a Lakers-Kings playoff game, the changeover crew worked their asses off to change the basketball court into the ice for the Avs-Kings playoff game...scheduled for that same night. Simple solution for Denver: Move the basketball game up.

In Kroenke's case, what would he rather have? Two events in one night or a bunch of pissed off wrestling fans who have to demand refunds for the owner's stupidity and ignorance?

But in this case, the NBA fans will say that the Denver Nuggets should get the venue at their scheduled time, and the WWE should move to either Loveland, Broomfield or The Springs.

Unfortunately for the NBA Fans, the WWE fans outnumber them in Denver. In fact, it's obvious that if the Nuggets weren't doing so well, no one would care. But because of the magnitude of this series, everyone has to care.

At the same time, what is the big deal?

Why can't the Lakers and Nuggets play on Saturday? They play Game Two Thursday night, but they can't play again until Sunday? It don't take that damn long to fly from LA to Denver. But the WWE is bringing the party by bus.

They are making their annual round to the Rockies. And instead of welcoming the WWE like they usually do, they are trying to send them packing from the venue...that the owner agreed to.

So who should move from the Pepsi Center this Monday night? Will the Nuggets move back to their old stomping grounds?

Will the WWE cave and move the whole show to Colorado Springs, forcing everyone who bought tickets to make the long drive to the World Arena in The Springs?

Or will both parties look at the bigger picture and move the obvious easy choice up a few hours?

In other words, get rid of the speculation and make this right for everyone. Give the Nuggets the Pepsi Center...but also give the WWE what you owe them: the Pepsi Center.

Or do you just want to stay in your office and avoid the thousands of angry NBA and WWE Fans in the process?
