How the Cleveland Browns' Second Round Could Have Gone Better
The Cleveland Browns' draft was an unorthodox, to say the least. Coach Eric Mangini did very well choosing smart players.
They had three picks in Round Two: Brian Robiskie, Mohamed Massaquoi, and David Veikune.
Many analysts had Robiskie rated No. 50 overall or lower. ESPN.com had him going 72ndl. But the Browns jumped on him at 36, which was too early.
Assuming ESPN.com was right, here is how the Browns' draft could have gone better:
Pick 36: The Browns passed up a lot of talent here, including ILB Rey Maualuga, OLB Everette Brown, and CB Alphonso Smith.
A better choice would have been Brown.
With D'Qwell Jackson and Eric Barton in the middle, and Kamerion Wimbley on the outside, Brown could have solidified the Browns' linebacker corps.
Now with an OLB, Hawaii DE/LB David Veikune would no longer have been the choice at 52 overall. No insult to Veikune, but Cleveland can do without him.
At pick 50—which the Browns got from Tampa Bay for Kellen Winslow Jr.—the Browns could have taken Robiskie instead of their actual pick, Massaquoi.
Nothing on Massaquoi, but he is another Braylon Edwards waiting to happen. Robiskie is a classic possession receiver who could be a future asset.
Under the proposed scenario, the Browns would have an OLB and a WR in the second round.
Pick 52: Here there were many choices.
Massaquoi could have still been available, but with all the receivers the Browns added, he shouldn't be needed.
An intriguing player still on the board was LeSean McCoy. His elusiveness and speed could complement Jamal Lewis' power running very nicely.
If these had been the Browns' second-round picks, I could see the Browns draft going as follows:
Pick 21: C Alex Mack
Pick 36: OLB Everette Brown
Pick 50: WR Brian Robiskie
Pick 52: RB LeSean McCoy
Pick 104: ILB Kaluka Maiava
Pick 177: CB Don Carey
Pick 191: CB Coye Francies
Pick 195: RB James Davis
I have the last four picks remaining the same. The question area here is drafting two running backs. They get LeSean's elusiveness and speed at 52 and James Davis' power at 195.
McCoy would see instant playing time behind Lewis, and Davis is Jamal's future replacement. Jamal's contract ends in two years.
Give Davis time to learn the game, and gain some pounds, and the Browns would have a great young one-two punch in McCoy and Davis.
Once again, I'm not down on Massaquoi or Veikune. I just believe that Brown, Robiskie, and McCoy would have made a better second round.
