Philip Rivers' Updated 2013 Fantasy Outlook and Trade Value After Week 4

Joseph ZuckerSep 29, 2013

Move over Eli Manning. There's a new best feast-or-famine fantasy quarterback, and his name is Philip Rivers.

The veteran signal-caller was 35-of-42 for 401 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in the San Diego Chargers' Week 4 win against the Dallas Cowboys.

It's the second time this year Rivers has eclipsed 400 yards passing.

That's the good news.

The bad news is that in the other two weeks, he had a combined 379 yards. His five touchdowns in those two games still ensured that owners were able to recoup some nice fantasy points.

With his upside, Rivers is good enough to be a secondary option and possibly even a starter in every fantasy league. Although he doesn't have the best receiving corps, he's able to spread the ball around enough to be effective.

Perhaps what's more encouraging is the pass protection. According to Football Outsiders, the Chargers ranked 23rd in 2012. Now, the unit is up to eighth.

At 31 years old, you cannot expect Rivers to all of a sudden become a different quarterback. You'll have to take the good with the bad. The bad can be very bad, but the good can be great.

At the very least, he's not going to bottom out the way Matt Schaub and Joe Flacco have.

Rivers has probably been snapped up in a majority of fantasy leagues. Even as inconsistent as he's been his entire career, many fantasy owners would have been seduced enough by his upside to have drafted him as a steady No. 2 option.

If you're in one of the few leagues where Rivers is available, make sure you grab him at the earliest opportunity.

For those who already own him, this might be the best time to trade him if that's something you've been looking at. His value is not going to be much higher than it is now. You cannot expect too many more 400-yard performances.
