B/R Needs a Sarcasm Font

Red ShannonMay 19, 2009

We're all comedians at heart.

Unfortunately, not everyone gets our humor.

Or maybe its our humor which doesn't get to everyone.

Either way you look at it, there is often a communication breakdown when humor is injected into a conversation. Even in a face-to-face conversation, the eyes often speak clearer than the mouth.

How much more then is the potential for misunderstanding in the flat, two dimensional world of the Internet? It takes a skillful wordsmith indeed to convey true meaning without the advantages of inflection, accent, and facial expression.

We've all been either victim or perpetrator of a comment written in jest which somehow missed its mark. A rousing debate suddenly falls off the drawbridge into the moat of disrespect.

So here's my suggestion: in the comment section of all articles, have a sarcasm button available for the commenter to enable when making a sarcastic, satirical, or humorous remark. You know...like the boldface or italic button on a notepad.

At least the reader would know the intent of the remark, whether actually funny or not.

Humor is most effective when its basis is in truth. What a wonderful tool we have at our disposal to get a point across while keeping the conversation light.

Since we're not all adept at using that tool, could we have a little help...please?
