Wake Up Bronco Nation!

Carlos MonagasMay 19, 2009

Now I really hate to beat a dead horse, but I just wrote an article and toward the end I mentioned how we, as Broncos fans, should stop comparing every quarterback we get to John Elway and I've already got a couple of e-mails saying how wrong I am.

Look, I loved Elway just as much as the next guy, but he is not coming back. Let it go.  Yes, he was great. I appreciate everything he ever did for the sport and my beloved team, but to expect another like him is just plain dumb.

Let me explain myself before everyone crucifies me.

Elway came out of Stanford in the great quarterback class of 1983. In many eyes he was the crown jewel as the first overall pick. John had the talent, charisma and most importantly the will to be great (just not for the Colts).  He was one of the teachable phenomenon in civilization. All these things made Elway great, and that's why we'll never get another like him.

I have talked to a lot of people regarding this subject, and I am disappointed to find over 70 percent of the Bronco fans hope for another Elway. While this is not a bad thing to wish for, it is a horrible thing to expect. John was the right guy at the right time, with the perfect attitude and talent for this city. We will never see that specific combination again.

Elway's charisma, talent and knack for the comeback gave this city personality and someone to cheer for. He never backed away from being considered a role model, or never made excuses for his play. He said the right thing at the right time to show how humble he was. He was tough and gutsy, yet careful and smart.

I have heard people that actually say, "moving on, is like forgetting all the wonderful things John did for us" or my favorite "what's wrong with letting a guy know that he can't compare to the greatest quarterback ever?".

As much as I love Elway he wasn't the greatest, he was one of them, but not the greatest. The notion that moving on is like forgetting Elway or all the things he did for this town is ridiculous.

In today's world, the athlete's ego is being inflated at such an early age, that when they make it to the pros they're cocky and arrogant.

I understand your pain. I really do. The simple fact still remains that Elway is long gone. We've been through quarterbacks like a frat boy goes through Jello shots.

The faster we can get all of Bronco nation to accept this fact, the faster we move on and accept someone else.

All I want is a quaterback good enough to win games and return the Broncos to greatness where they belong. For God's sake, even Trent Dilfer won one and Brad Johnson and Ron Jawarski each went to one. We can find one that is good enough to win.

I hope this article comes through in the manner in which I intended it, which was to show my gratitude toward Elway and acknowledge all his accomplishments.

Now we should start looking toward the future and be ready to accept the next, good enough to win with, quarterback who comes our way.
