And for Perth the game was up almost immediately—after nine balls of their chase they were 11-3, and, despite the innings improving, never came close to the target.
It all looked so different for Otago early on—Joel Paris, making his Scorchers debut, took two wickets with his first two balls in T20, removing Hamish Rutherford and Brendon McCullum and leaving the Volts in some trouble.
But Broom proceeded unfazed and found willing allies in Derek de Boorder (45 from 28) and then Ryan ten Doeschate (66 from 26) as the run rate soared meteorically.
In the final 10 overs, they added 165 runs as a the Scorchers bowlers had their figures torched.
Ian Butler removed two Perth batsmen in his first over, then ran out the captain Simon Katich in the next.
Adam Voges' 36 steadied the innings, while Hilton Cartwright's 73 from 54 balls restored some dignity as they crept up to 180-5 from their 20 overs.
But having raced through qualifying undefeated, Otago are fast becoming the team to beat.
