NFL Spreads Week 4: Highlighting Weekend's Most Head-Scratching Lines

Patrick ClarkeJun 8, 2018

There are a handful of heavy favorites set to take the field in Week 4, but some are much more surprising than others.

Unsurprisingly, the Vegas oddsmakers like the reigning NFC champion San Francisco 49ers to beat the division rival St. Louis Rams on Thursday night. On the other hand, the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions represent some of the unexpected favorites this week.

Here, we'll take a look at the latest spreads for Week 4 while highlighting the most unreasonable lines heading into the weekend.

Arizona Cardinals at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-3)

It's difficult to imagine the winless Bucs getting any love from the oddsmakers following Week 3's embarrassing loss to the Patriots in New Englandlet alone being three-point favorites.

While, once upon a time, a 20-point loss to New England wasn't so bad, it says a lot that Tampa was unable to get anything positive going against this year's Patriots, who rank 17th in total offense and 24th against the run.

Running back Doug Martin appears to be the only positive thing Tampa has going for it in 2013, and that's why it's shocking that the Bucs are actually favorites at home in Week 4 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Sure, the Cardinals aren't much better than the Bucs record-wise at 1-2, but remember, Arizona already knocked off a 2-1 Detroit Lions team this season and played the St. Louis Rams tough on the road to start the year.

More importantly, the Cardinals boast the NFL's third-ranked run defense through three weeks and should be able to neutralize Martin and the Bucs' ground game.

With the Bucs looking ahead to a bye week in Week 5, I like the Cardinals to win this game on Sunday.

New York Giants at Kansas City Chiefs (-4)

How can the 3-0 Kansas City Chiefs only be favored by four points at home against the 0-3 New York Giants?

Yes, the Giants have more Super Bowls than the Chiefs and have had more consistent success over the years, but this is 2013. New York is not only 0-3, but coming off a shocking 38-0 loss to the Carolina Panthers, who were previously winless themselves.

We knew going into the Giants-Panthers game that New York had absolutely zero running game, but now we know that the Giants defense is in complete shambles as well.

On top of the woes on both sides of the ball, the Giants have compounded the situation by playing careless, sloppy football.

New York has a league-high 13 giveaways through three games and is tied with Pittsburgh for the worst turnover differential in football heading into Week 4 at minus-nine.

At plus-nine, Kansas City boasts the best differential in the NFL.

Dallas Cowboys (-2) at San Diego Chargers

Two points isn't a lot, but the fact that the Dallas Cowboys are favorites to win on the West Coast in Week 4 is startling.

The San Diego Chargers may be 1-2, but they are a much more dangerous team than either of the two clubs Dallas has beaten this season: the New York Giants and St. Louis Rams.

With veteran Philip Rivers at quarterback, the Cowboys' 22nd-ranked pass defense will be in for a rude awakening. Remember, this is a Dallas secondary that surrendered 450 yards to Eli Manning in Week 1.

Also, the Cowboys are always a different team on the road. Dallas was dismantled in its only trip to the West Coast a year agofalling 27-7 to the Seahawks in Seattle—and is 0-1 away from Jerry's World to start 2013.
