Kenny Guiton Has Been Good, but There's No Quarterback Controversy at Ohio State

David RegimbalJun 5, 2018

Since Braxton Miller injured his knee against San Diego State, backup quarterback Kenny Guiton has played brilliantly for the Ohio State Buckeyes. The redshirt senior has thrown for 643 yards, 12 touchdowns and two interceptions, all while completing 68 percent of his passes.

In his first two starts as a quarterback, Guiton set two school records. Against Cal, he connected with Devin Smith for a 90-yard touchdown pass, the longest in school history. Against Florida A&M last Saturday,ย he threw six touchdown passes, shattering Ohio State's old record before the halftime whistle blew.

Despite Guiton's historic run, there is no quarterback controversy at Ohio State. When Braxton Miller is healthy enough to return, he will be Ohio State's starter.

That's something Urban Meyer made very clear after the Buckeyes' 76-point rout of Florida A&M, according to Eleven Warriors.

"

Meyer just asked if Braxton was still the No. 1 quarterback. "Yes," was the reply.

Exactly when Miller returns is the bigger unknown.

Ari Wasserman of The Plain Dealerย writes that Meyer wanted his star quarterback on the field against the Rattlers.

โ€œI wanted to play him,โ€ Meyer said. โ€œBraxton felt like he couldnโ€™t go. He tried really hard, we had a good week of pushing him through, but with good athletes, those (knee sprains) are tough injuries.โ€

Miller sprained his MCL on on the first drive of Ohio State's Week 2 matchup with the Aztecs. While a sprain isn't as serious as an ACL tear, it's an injury that could easilyย re-aggravate by a runner who makes quick lateral movements.

That lateral movement is what makes Miller one of the most dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks in the country. Miller needs to feel confident that his knee will hold up before returning to the field.

Even though Miller remains at the top of the depth chart, it's important to note how much the coaching staff likes Guiton. His play over the last three weeks has Meyer thinking of ways to incorporate both of his quarterbacks into the game plan.ย

"(Braxton Miller) is our starting quarterback. Our backup has earned some time," Meyer said, according to Ben Axelrod of Buckeye Sports Bulletin.ย

Considering how close Miller was to playing last week, his return to the field will likely come this Saturday against No. 23 Wisconsin. Whether it's this week or not, though, he's still Ohio State's No. 1 quarterback.
