Start Em Sit Em Week 3: Breaking Down Last-Minute QB Decisions

Jun 8, 2018

Quarterback has developed into the most underrated position in the fantasy world with much of the focus on running backs and wide receivers, but a quarterback can make or break a fantasy team each week.

Week 3 is no different in this regard with familiar quarterback names set to face tough matchups that are difficult to discern from a fantasy standpoint.

Struggle with the Week 3 decisions no more. Below are six quarterbacks who deserve to start or sit on the bench based on their matchup and other pertinent details.

Start 'Em: Sam Bradford, St. Louis Rams vs. Dallas Cowboys

Guess what? Sam Bradford has scored the fifth-most fantasy points in standard leagues this year thanks to his 651 yards and five scores.

Bradford is now surrounded by quality weapons like rookie receiver Tavon Austin and tight end Jared Cook. The best part? Bradford is going up against a woeful Dallas secondary that gives up 314 passing yards per game.

While there's a certain underachieving stigma attached to Bradford's name, he's a heck of a fantasy quarterback.

Sit 'Em: Tom Brady, New England Patriots vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Yes, we're to that point with Tom Brady, who has had mediocre fantasy outings against both the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills. Much of it is the lack of weapons surrounding Brady, but that situation isn't getting any better.

Now add in the fact Brady has a date with an outstanding Tampa Bay defense that held Drew Brees to mediocre fantasy production with just over 300 yards passing, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Rob Gronkowski is questionable at best, which isn't good enough against such a stout defense. There will be a time to start Brady this year, but it isn't now.

Start 'Em: Andy Dalton, Cincinnati Bengals vs. Green Bay Packers

Andy Dalton is by no means a top-tier quarterback, but from a fantasy sense he gets the job done in deeper leagues.

Dalton's supporting cast on its own makes any quarterback under center in Cincinnati worth a start. A.J. Green is arguably the NFL's best receiver, tight ends Tyler Eifert and Jermaine Gresham make for huge targets and rookie Giovani Bernard is a true threat out of the backfield.

Dalton has thrown for 562 yards and three scores before heading into a matchup that will surely turn into a shootout against Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay.

Sit 'Em: Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Chicago Bears

Jump across the AFC North and a big name quarterback is having a rough go of it from a fantasy and real perspective.

Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is struggling behind a patchwork offensive line, completing fewer than 60 percent of his passes for 442 yards and a pair of touchdowns and interceptions.

Now Roethlisberger has a game against a Chicago defense that renders most fantasy quarterbacks useless thanks to elite corners Charles Tillman and Tim Jennings. Roethlisberger is going to be hit constantly and make mistakes in what is a nightmare matchup.

Start 'Em: Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers vs. Indianapolis Colts

How quickly a week changes things.

Smart fantasy owners knew to avoid Colin Kaepernick last week against Seattle as he threw for 127 yards and three interceptions.

Things are going to change in a hurry for Kaepernick, who now goes against an Indianapolis defense that has been shaky at best while allowing Terrelle Pryor to notch over 300 total yards and Ryan Tannehill to throw for over 300.

Kaepernick will be back to form in Week 3.

Sit 'Em: Matt Schaub, Houston Texans vs. Baltimore Ravens

Matt Schaub has quietly been one of the better fantasy quarterbacks this year thanks to his 644 yards passing, six touchdowns and just three interceptions.

Despite his positive output so far this season, Schaub is very much a matchup quarterback, meaning he should not be touched unless the odds are stacked in his favor.

Week 3 the odds are not a guarantee for Schaub in a tough game against a Baltimore defense that is slowly progressing each week. To make matters worse, Schaub's left tackle Duane Brown is out for the contest, further confirming the fact Schaub is a horrible fantasy play this week.
