Oakland A's Keep Winning While Their Stadium Keeps Leaking Sewage

Gabe ZaldivarJun 3, 2018

The Oakland A's beat the Los Angeles Angels, 2-1, on Tuesday, which is remarkable considering the team faced the horror and embarrassment of a sewage leak in the seventh inning.ย

USA Today's Jorge L. Ortiz reports the A's had to deal with their second such fiasco of the season, a problem most teams would consider two too many.ย

According toย Comcast SportsNet Bay Area's Rael Enteen, there may still be some sewage issues on Wednesday.ย

---End of update---

Original text:

According to the report, the bathroom adjacent to the home dugout suffered a clog, forcing the players to watch the rest of the game well away from the overflow.

The best quote has to be from Oakland shortstopย Jed Lowrie who offered, "There's no carpet down there (in the dugout), so it's a little bit better, but it's still pretty gross."

Sadly, the players are left to look at the bright sideโ€”at least there's no carpet in the dugout.ย ย

He continued with, "It's kind of repulsive, honestly." To which we say, no kidding.ย

Back in June, CBS San Francisco reported on a problem they state is an issue that even plagues O.co on days there are no games.ย

However, on one fateful day in June, the sewage pipe clogged and forced two teams out of the clubhouses. "The pipes backed up on the lower levels of the stadium during Oaklandโ€™s 10-2 victory, creating a stink and pools of water in the clubhouses used by both teams and the umpires."

It's enough to make you gag while reading, let alone preparing for a homestand. On the bright side, the team seems to be 2-0 on sewage leak nights this season.ย

To be fair,ย A's VP of stadium operationsย David Rinettiย wasย carefulย to point out that Tuesday's sewage issue was nowhere near the plight the team suffered a few months ago. "It doesn't seem to be related to that (June's leak). This one wasn't even close to the other issue."

As for the A'sโ€”the team with a limited payroll and bathrooms that are known to clogโ€”they took Tuesday's game, which was their sixth win in seven games. After sweeping division rival the Texas Rangers this weekend, they now sit with a 6.5-game lead in the AL West and are nearly assured of the division.ย

The report reminds us that a move to a new stadium in San Jose has stalled at the moment, so the team will just have to cross its fingers in regards to its bathrooms for the time being. However, the A's continue to be a sparkling example of how to get so much out of so little.ย
