Better Know a Houston Texan: Andre Johnson

David HartnettMay 17, 2009

From September 2008 to January 2009 Andre Johnson was the talk of the NFL.

The Houston Texans wide receiver earned Pro Bowl and first team All-Pro honors for his 115 reception, 1575 yard and eight touchdown performance during the regular season.

However, for this former University of Miami Hurricane, he’s one of the more likable members of the NFL community for his subdued demeanor, as well as his contributions both on and off-the-field.

Thus, with a little insight, one would find out that Johnson is one of the more unique superstars in the league.

Q: 2008 has been the pinnacle of your career so far.  How do you intend to improve upon such an impressive season?

Q:  With “playoffs” being the word used frequently by both media member and fans alike, what can you, along with the offense, do to ensure this franchise’s first playoff berth?

Q:  Kyle Shanahan is taking over the play-calling duties this upcoming season.  What do you anticipate as being the biggest changes between what Kyle will do, and what coach Kubiak did?

Q: To this bystander, it seems you and Matt (Schaub) have a better rapport than what was evident between you and former Texans quarterback.  What makes the Schaub to Johnson dynamic so successful?

Q: How much comfort does it give you to know when opposing defensive coordinators decide to double you, that players such as Kevin (Walter), Owen (Daniels) and David (Anderson)—to name a few—can take advantage of their favorable matchups?

Q: By the end of last season, most pundits considered you and Larry Fitzgerald as the top two at your position.  What is your reaction when such recognition is given?

Q: A few years ago former Denver Broncos wide receiver Jerry Rice mentioned that he would like for you to train with him in the offseason  Since then, have you had the chance to train with him? And if so, what did you learn working alongside the “greatest wide receiver”?

Q: Keeping with Rice, have you sought after, or has he given you any advice?

Q:  Considering the amount of wealth and success you have achieved so far, what continues to motivate you?

Q:  Your persona fits well with that saying of “speak softly and carry a big stick.” So being more of a “lead by example” type of player, how honored were you to be designated as a team captain by your teammates?

Q: Something that may go unrecognized to the masses is your contributions off-the-field.  Namely, all your charity work.  What led you to become so involved within the community?

Q: What’s more enjoyable: Catching a touchdown, or looking at kids face following an 80-second Christmas shopping spree?
