Champions League Predictions 2013-14: Picking Winners for Wednesday's Top Games

Rob GoldbergJun 8, 2018

The group stage of the 2013-14 UEFA Champions League is underway, and the second day of action is certain to be just as good as the first.

In Tuesday's matches, top squads like Manchester United, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich came away with dominant wins to prove they are top contenders for this year's title.

There will be a number of other quality squads on display Wednesday, and all of them want to start things off with a strong performance in their opening match. Here is a breakdown of the most exciting games of the day.

Marseille vs. Arsenal

A few weeks ago, it didn't seem as though Arsenal would be a legitimate contender in the Premier League, let alone Champions League.

However, the addition of Mesut Ozil completely transforms the roster, and the entire squad has been playing extremely well of late. The German midfielder is excellent at creating opportunities for his teammates, and all of a sudden there are plenty of guys who can finish, including Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey.

This attack will be difficult to stop, although Marseille have the ability to do just that. Last year's Ligue 1 runner-ups are capable of showing patience and controlling possession for long enough to limit their opponent's opportunities.

The problem the squad does have is a lack of consistency offensively. Andre-Pierre Gignac and Dimitri Payet have been solid so far, but this team is too easy for a good defense to shut down.

Arsenal should be able to do that enough to advance with a quality win.

Prediction: Marseille 1, Arsenal 2

Barcelona vs. Ajax Amsterdam

Ajax Amsterdam lost an important part of the squad when Christian Eriksen was sold to Tottenham. However, there are still quality players everywhere on attack to make this a high-scoring club.

Unfortunately, they will have little chance of sticking with Barcelona in this match. The Spanish club have simply too many world-class players for their upcoming opponent to defend.

While Lionel Messi gets most of the headlines, midfielders Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas, Xavi and Neymar can create opportunities for anyone, and Pedro and Alexis Sanchez are as good as anyone around the net.

Of course, Messi can beat most teams on his own, and he should be good for at least a goal or two in this match.

Barca should be able to easily get away with a win in this one to start its run toward a UCL title.

Prediction: Barcelona 3, Ajax Amsterdam 1

Napoli vs. Borussia Dortmund

After finishing second in the Champions League last year, Robert Lewandowski and Borussia Dortmund will look to improve upon that result this time around.

Lewandowski had already proved himself against the best teams in Europe, but defenses now have another person to focus on with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The 24-year-old player has five goals in five league matches and provides Dortmund with a great deal of balance.

Meanwhile, Napoli are trying to make up for the loss of Edinson Cavani, who led the squad with 29 goals last season. Gonzalo Higuain has the skill to fill in, but the overall offensive talent is lacking compared to a year ago.

Loanee goalkeeper Pepe Reina will be under a lot of pressure from the German attackers, and Dortmund should be able to put a couple of goals in the net.

Prediction: Borussia Dortmund 2, Napoli 0
