Manchester United vs. Bayer Leverkusen: Red Devils Must Get off to Fast Start

Kyle NewportSep 17, 2013

The UEFA Champions League gets underway on Tuesday, and Manchester United must start quickly against Bayer Leverkusen in order to set the stage for a deep run in their attempt to win the title.

That means they must start fast in two different ways. The Red Devils need to get out to a quick lead in their opening game, which should in turn help them start fast in group play.

Real Madrid knocked United out in the Round of 16 last time, and fans expect more out of their club.

Group A consists of United, Bayer Leverkusen, FC Shakhtar Donetsk and Real Sociedad.

The Red Devils are expected to make it out of their group, but that won't be enough for fans. They want a deep run, and to have the team compete for the title.

New manager David Moyes will get his first taste of Champions League action. He has a roster that is extremely talented, but it will be challenged by some of the world's top teams.

Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Shinji Kagawa and Michael Carrick will make it tough for opponents to take down the Red Devils.

When Bayer Leverkusen visits Old Trafford on Tuesday, they better be prepared from the start.

United have struggled to score in recent fixtures. They went two matches without a goal before finding the back of the net twice against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The biggest positive from the last match was Rooney's impact. He got his first goal of the season off a great free kick, and United need him to continue to score if they are going to contend in the Champions League.

Most of the squad's biggest competition have made improvements, so it was important for Moyes to make a big move. He ended up signing Marouane Fellaini to solidify the midfield position, which will make Carrick's job much easier.

Midfield was the one position that Moyes needed to address, and he was able to get a high-profile player to fill the void.

Van Persie is a prolific scorer, and Rooney has the ability to give his team another scoring threat. Scoring before the Champions League got underway was huge for Rooney, and it should give the team a lot of confidence in him to be a factor against tough competition.

Going down early would create a sense of urgency at Old Trafford. The Red Devils need to be ready to play aggressively in order to set the tone. An early goal would allow the players to relax and play their game.

Moyes has a talented club, and United should have no problem getting out of Group A. The group stage will serve as a tune-up as the club can try to get into a rhythm before the intensity turns up.

United need a quick start in the opener, which will allow it to get valuable points early in group play.
