NFL Power Rankings 2013: Highlighting Biggest Movers After Week 2

Richard LangfordJun 6, 2018

The second week of the NFL season helped separate some myths from realities. However, it's not like we are dealing with a clear picture of the NFL pecking order yet.

While there are teams that clearly belong at or near the top or bottom, the majority of these teams are jumbled in the middle. Of course, this makes trying to decipher the power rankings all the more fun.

Here is my latest effort—followed by three teams that made big moves after Week 1.

No. 13: Kansas City Chiefs

A lot of people were touting the Kansas City Chiefs as a dark horse entering this season. I was not one of them.

The Chiefs' offensive talent didn't seem like a nice fit for the pass-happy Andy Reid. Also, while the Chiefs have talent, it's not like it's so overwhelming they were high on everyone's list.

All of a sudden, this team is sneaking onto my radar.

In Week 1, the Chiefs dismantled the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, the Jaguars are terrible. So, I waited for this week when the Chiefs faced a stiffer test against the Dallas Cowboys. The Chiefs emerged with a solid 17-16 victory.

I still don't think this team has the talent to make a deep run in the playoffs, but Reid is playing smart and sound football. And in today's league of parity, that is enough to sneak into the playoffs.

No. 20: Washington Redskins

Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post reported that there is a growing number of Redskins fans calling for Robert Griffin III to be benched in favor of Kirk Cousins.

Sure, Griffin hasn't looked at his best as he returns from his knee injury, but this notion is ludicrous. Not only should Redskins fans execute a touch of patience with their phenomenally talented quarterback, but it's just silly to be worrying about the quarterback at this point.

The Redskins defense is atrocious.

Given the unpredictable nature of facing an Eagles offense under the debut of head coach Chip Kelly, I gave the Redskins a pass for allowing 443 yards of offense and 33 points in Week 1.

However, I'm not as willing to give them a pass after getting shredded by Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. While there is no shame in Rodgers picking apart your defense, allowing him to throw for over 300 yards in the first half is a little excessive.

In all, the Packers wound up with 580 offensive yards, as the Redskins looked completely lost on defense. I don't care how good the quarterback play is, until that defense improves, this team is going nowhere.

No. 28: Carolina Panthers

I had the Carolina Panthers pegged as a possible playoff team, and maybe they'll turn things around. However, after their 0-2 start, as you can see, I'm really down on Carolina.

The Panthers have looked much better along the defensive front. I actually considered their 12-7 Week 1 loss to the Seahawks a positive sign.

The defense looked great in that contest, and the Seahawks' tough defense is a lot for any offense to handle.

However, the Panthers came out and lost a heartbreaker to the Buffalo Bills in Week 2. The offense put up 23 points in that game, but then the defense dropped the ball and allowed rookie quarterback EJ Manuel to author a late drive to steal the win. Not at all unlike what Russell Wilson did to them in Week 1.

The Panthers will win a few games this year, and I don't expect them to remain this low in the power rankings. However, I don't see them being able to put the whole package together long enough to make serious waves this year.
