Mayweather vs. Canelo Results: Money Proves He's Best Boxer of Generation

Jeremy FuchsJun 2, 2018

Floyd "Money" Mayweather absolutely dominated Saul "Canelo" Alvarez by a majority decision of 114-114, 116-112, 117-111 on Saturday night.

The tie score, delivered by judge C.J. Ross, left many incredulous:

Ross' score does not indicate just how much Mayweather dominated. He controlled the bout from start to finish, using defense and skill to beat Canelo.

Mayweather landed more than double the punches that Canelo did, as per Showtime Sports:

Money didn't score a KO, but that doesn't make his performance any less impressive. In fact, the way he won was actually more impressive than a sheer KO. He won with shoulder rolls, incredibly quick hands and surprisingly quick feet. He's a boxer's boxer, a true technician who understands how to win.

His skills, along with that sterling 45-0 record, make Mayweather not only the best boxer in the game today, but, without a doubt, the best boxer of his generation.

You can toss out Mike Tyson's name, but "Iron Mike" had six losses in his career. You can mention Evander Holyfield, but "The Real Deal" has a staggering 10 losses.

You can even bring up Manny Pacquiao, but "Pac-Man" has lost his last two fights.

There is no one in the last 20 or so years who can match Mayweather's record, and there is no one who possesses Money's combination of skill and savvy.

It's hard to know how Mayweather would have done against the likes of Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier or George Foreman. It's entirely possible that he would have been a nobody against the Golden Generation of boxers.

We can't truly evaluate Mayweather against the past. But we do know a few things for certain. We know that Mayweather is one of the best defensive boxers ever, and it's practically impossible to land a big blow on him.

We know that Mayweather has consistently lived up to the hype of all his matches and beaten all the guys who were supposed to be the one to dethrone him. We know that Mayweather always lands a lot more punches than his opponents do. And we know that Mayweather, always, always wins.

It would be great to see Mayweather fight someone like Pacquiao. But even if he doesn't, he will still be the best boxer of his generation. He's won every big fight and has nothing left to prove. He's shown that he's a skilled boxer with tremendous ring sense and uncanny savvy.

Barring an incredible upset in his next fights, then Mayweather will, without a doubt, be considered the best boxer of his generation. Beyond that, he'll be in the discussion as one of the best ever.
