Mayweather vs Canelo Press Conference: Money Claims to Have Dislocated Elbow

Tyler BrookeJun 4, 2018

Even in a dominating win over Canelo Alvarez, it appears that Floyd Mayweather may have actually been injured in Saturday night's fight.

Mayweather was able to take home his 45th career win and keep his undefeated record intact.  Canelo, on the other hand, wasn't able to say the same thing.  Alvarez dropped his first career fight, putting him at 42-1-1 for his career.

Even after the win, it wasn't all positive.  There was a controversial scoring of the fight, making it a win by majority decision rather than unanimous.  One judge had the fight as a draw at 114-114, while the other two judges had Floyd winning quite easily.

That's not it, however, as it appears that Mayweather dislocated his elbow in the fight.

Chris Mannix from Sports Illustrated reported a quote from Floyd during his press conference about the injury.

LaceUpBoxing provided additional information, claiming that the injury likely happened around the sixth or seventh round.

If it did happen around this time, it would make a bit of sense.  In the seventh round, Mayweather was able to land a nice uppercut on Alvarez that hit him completely by surprise.  He then started landing shot after shot, and Canelo started looking more and more lost after each blow.

Despite how dazed Canelo looked, Mayweather was unable to knock him down.  If Mayweather truly did dislocate his elbow, it would seem to fit with why he didn't finish off the 23-year-old fighter.

Mayweather also did seem to take it much easier than he should have in the end of the fight.  Canelo came out aggressive in the eighth round and certainly looked better than Money in those three minutes. Mayweather also wasn't throwing as many punches from there on out.

Vic Tafur from the San Francisco Chronicle claimed that the injury was why Mayweather was unable to take out Canelo.  At the same time, he also mentioned that Mayweather claimed an injury was the reason he couldn't knock out Robert Guerrero earlier in the year.

It is unclear whether Mayweather truly did dislocate his elbow, but there is a good chance that there is some injury based off of what we saw at the end of the fight.  The severity of the injury is also uncertain, along with how much time the injury will take to heal.

Regardless, Mayweather got the win, and he will have plenty of time to heal and enjoy his big payday.
