Aside from the WWE Championship match between Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan, there aren't many bouts receiving a ton of hype heading into Night of Champions.
While there is very little doubt that Orton and Bryan are going to do a fantastic job, there are some other matches on the card that will be better than most are expecting.
Night of Champions will be hard-pressed to equal or exceed the quality of last month's SummerSlam pay-per-view, but that doesn't mean that it can't be solid in its own right. In order for that to happen, though, the undercard must be better than expected. Night of Champions doesn't have multiple main-event-caliber matches to fall back on, but the in-ring work promises to be strong.
Here are three Night of Champions matches that aren't being talked about much leading up to the event but have the ability to steal the show.
Tag Team Turmoil Match
While this bout technically isn't on the main card, the Tag Team Turmoil match to determine the No. 1 contenders for the Tag Team Championship figures to be filled with nonstop action. This contest will pit the Prime Time Players, the Usos, the Real Americans, Tons of Funk and 3MB against each other in a gauntlet-style match that will feature five of the WWE's best teams. Although there isn't a ton of star power involved, there is no doubt that all five teams will put in their best effort.
Aside from Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns there aren't really any dominant teams in the WWE right now, but there are several solid duos. There has been a renewed focus on tag team wrestling in recent weeks, and it will culminate on Sunday. The Prime Time Players and the Usos seem like the only possible winners, but look for Darren Young and Titus O'Neil to get the nod. Young fully expects that to be the case as well, according to a recent tweet.
The Prime Time Players have been on fire lately, and although it has clearly coincided with Young's announcement that he is gay, they deserve the push regardless. Young and O'Neil form a quality team, and it's nice to see them thriving as faces. In terms of the Tag Team Turmoil match itself, it is a match that hasn't been seen in quite some time due largely to the fact that WWE's tag division has been thin. There is quite a bit of depth now, though, and it will be on full display.
Fatal 4-Way Divas Match
The vast majority of WWE fans seem to be jaded when it comes to the Divas division, and it's tough to blame them. The creative team hasn't put a great deal of effort into building compelling angles in recent years, but the WWE has finally struck gold with AJ Lee as Divas Champion. Although AJ still doesn't have any credible challengers coming after her, the current angle that has seen her lash out against the women involved in Total Divas makes sense, and it has allowed AJ to showcase herself on the mic, which is something she has done very well in recent months.
With that said, the main focus here is on in-ring work, and the Fatal 4-Way for the Divas Championship has a chance to be an absolute firecracker. Not only is AJ a great wrestler, but so are Natalya and Naomi. Brie Bella is the fourth wheel in this equation, and while she isn't a great wrestler, she's dating one, so that must count for something. Brie fully intends to leave Detroit with the Divas Championship as evidenced by her tweet, but that is highly unlikely to happen.
AJ is definitely the favorite as she hasn't done anything that would warrant taking the title away from her. Also, there isn't much that Natalya, Naomi or Brie can do with it at this point, so it would be best to have AJ overcome the Total Divas triumvirate through sneaky means. The only danger with regards to this match is the Divas outside the ring getting involved and turning the match into a mess, but it should be a fine bout provided the four Divas in the match itself are allowed to do their thing.
Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns vs. Prime Time Players
Provided the Prime Time Players escape the pre-show Tag Team Turmoil match with a victory, they will challenge Tag Team Champions Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns for the straps on the main card. Although it's fairly predictable that The Shield will retain in this scenario, it doesn't mean that they can't put on a fine performance. Rollins and Reigns haven't had many threatening challengers since dispatching of Team Hell No, but they almost always manage to impress from a wrestling perspective.
The Prime Time Players happen to be very underrated in that regard as well, and there is little doubt that they will mesh well with Rollins and Reigns. Reigns and O'Neil are very similar in that they are the powerhouses of their respective teams, while Rollins and Young will handle the technical aspects of the match. Also, it will be great to see the Prime Time Players in a big-match situation as they had been utilized as an enhancement team for much of the past year prior to about a month ago.
When Rollins and Reigns faced The Usos on the Money in the Bank pre-show, they truly set the tone for the remainder of the show as they put on one of the best tag team matches of the year. The Prime Time Players have a different style than The Usos, but The Shield shouldn't have any trouble creating some chemistry with them. By the end of the night, this could very well be considered one of the pay-per-view's best contests.
