Philadelphia Eagles Offseason Review

Rob ZMay 16, 2009

Okay, guys, this is my first article, so take it easy on me.

To start, the Eagles' offseason had its up and downs. Many fans believed that our offseason was going to be horrible after losing back-up running back Correll Buckhalter, both of our starting tackles, and of course, 13-year vet Brian Dawkins. I, too, was one of those fans who believed the Eagles wouldn't do anything and would probably draft no skilled players in the draft, but I was proved wrong

The first big signing was Stacy Andrews. This move was very smart for the Birds, because for one, we needed a new tackle, and secondly, he might be able to help brother Shawn Andrews get back on track. Next, the Eagles went after safety Sean Jones. They also added another safety, Rashad Baker. That will give us more depth at the position after losing two safeties to free agency. Alsom this will give the Eagles' back field more speed with new safeties. Another big pick-up was fullback Leonard Weaver. I really like this move because he can strengthen up our run game and we have our first real fullback since John Ritchie.

The biggest move the Eagles made, though, was for tackle Jason Peters. The reason why I liked this move is because he is one of the best in the league at what he does and he is a very good run blocker, which gives me hope that the Eagles may run the ball more this season. I believe with our new tackles and return of guard Shawn Andrews, who will be playing tackle this season, our line will be much younger and more talented.

I was unsure what the Eagles were going to do with their draft picks, but when I saw the Eagles trade up, I knew something good was going on. Taking Maclin was a very good move for the Birds. He will add more speed to an already speedy receiving corp. Drafting McCoy was a good move, too, as this will fill the gap Buckhalter left. We also have two young tight ends in Celek and Ingram, who are both very dangerous in the passing game. The trade for Ellis Hobbs was huge, too. We already traded away Lito and were in need of a veteran corner, and also Brown is upset with his contract. Now he can play with former teammate Asante Samuel.

Hopefully, the best draft on paper for Andy Reid will turn into the best draft on the field and the Eagles can return in '09.
