Week 2 Waiver Wire: Players Who Earned Roster Spots After Opening Weekend

Kyle NewportJun 8, 2018

Fantasy football owners are scrambling to pick up players on the waiver wire, and Terrelle Pryor of the Oakland Raiders is one of the players who earned a spot on rosters after a big performance in Week 1.

The players on this list had strong showings in the first week, and many fantasy owners will be looking to add them to their teams.

It's too early to give up on players on your roster, but these players have the potential to have very productive seasons.

Here are a few players who earned roster spots after the opening weekend.

Terrelle Pryor, QB, Oakland Raiders (Owned in 9.9 percent of leagues)

Not many people had high expectations for Terrelle Pryor or the Oakland Raiders this season, but the quarterback almost led his team to an upset win over the Indianapolis Colts.

The 24-year-old threw for 217 yards and a score in his second career start. He added 112 rushing yards on 13 carries, so it looks like he could have a strong season as a dual-threat quarterback.

Pryor did throw two interceptions, including one with a chance to give his team the win. Although he will need to make better decisions in the future, it was a promising start.

The former Ohio State star differs from some of the other mobile quarterbacks, as he uses his size to his advantage. The 6'6" quarterback is much bigger than Russell Wilson or Robert Griffin III, and his body is better suited to take hits.

Oakland isn't going to win its division, but Pryor has a chance to turn into a star quarterback if he continues putting up those types of numbers.

Julian Edelman, WR, New England Patriots (Owned in 15.9 percent of leagues)

Rob Gronkowski is still out after multiple surgeries, and Zach Sudfeld and Danny Amendola were banged up in the opener, so Tom Brady is going to need to find someone to throw to. That man is going to be Julian Edelman.

The 27-year-old had 79 receiving yards and two touchdowns on seven receptions against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. He has been on the team since 2009, so he has had time to work with Brady.

New England will need Edelman to continue to put up big numbers, especially Thursday night against the New York Jets.

Edelman put up 19 fantasy points in Week 1a total only six other receivers topped. He has Brady throwing him the football, so many owners will jump at the chance to get one of the Patriots' top targets.

Injuries to his teammates have made him a bigger part of the team's offense, so he should get picked up in many leagues on the waiver wire.

Julius Thomas, TE, Denver Broncos (Owned in 38.8 percent of leagues prior to Week 1)

Before Week 1, Julius Thomas was owned in less than 40 percent of ESPN leagues. He is going to be owned in nearly every league after his team's opening game.

Thomas had the second-best performance (23 points) of any tight end. Only Jared Cook of the St. Louis Rams, who scored 24, had more fantasy points.

With Peyton Manning playing like the best quarterback in football, Thomas will continue to benefit. He had fives catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

Denver is loaded on offense. It has Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker and Wes Welker at receiver, so Julius Thomas should be open quite often as teams try to stop the prolific playmakers at wideout.

Manning has always been able to get his tight end involved. He was able to make Dallas Clark a big part of his offense in Indianapolis, and Julius Thomas could be the next player Manning turns into an All-Pro tight end.
