Ranking Teams Most Likely to Win Night of Champions Tag Team Turmoil Match

Ryan DilbertJun 1, 2018

To earn a title shot at Night of Champions, one team is going to have to emerge out of chaos.

WWE announced on Monday's Raw that The Prime Time Players, Tons of Funk, The Real Americans, The Usos and 3MB will battle in a Tag Team Turmoil match on the pre-show for the right to face The Shield that same night.

Which team has the best shot of winning that elimination bout? Who should Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins prepare for?

Based on their recent win-loss records and how they'd fit as challengers to The Shield, here are the teams mostly likely to earn a chance at the tag team championship.

5. 3MB

1 of 5

3MB has less of a shot of winning the Tag Team Turmoil match than the Washington Generals have of beating the Harlem Globetrotters.

Drew McIntyre, Heath Slater and Jinder Mahal have served as bottomfeeders throughout their run as 3MB. That hasn't changed in recent weeks.

The Usos defeated 3MB twice in five days, knocking them off on the Aug. 14 edition of Main Event and again on the following episode of Raw. Even when all three members took on Kane by his lonesome, the air guitar-playing trio ended the night without a win.

3MB's inclusion is just a way to round out the field; they are not the group to bet on.

4. Tons of Funk

2 of 5

Tons of Funk vs. The Shield sounds like a match one might catch on WWE Main Event, not a pay-per-view.

The comic relief duo of Tensai and Brodus Clay are more believable challengers than 3MB mostly because of their size. Despite their status as buffoons, Clay and Tensai could give Reigns and Rollins a surprisingly difficult match.

It's the lack of momentum that has Tons of Funk one of the biggest long shots to win the pre-show bout.

Clay and Tensai lost to the Wyatt Family on both Raw Aug. 5 and SmackDown July 26, being dominated in the process. Tons of Funk also lasted less than seven minutes when given a shot against The Shield on the July 8 episode of Raw.

The teams ahead of them are too hot to fall to the comedy characters.

3. The Real Americans

3 of 5

Talent wise, Jack Swagger and Antonio Cesaro are certainly worthy of title contention.

Their heel statuses and rumored next rivals make The Real Americans less likely than their babyface counterparts to come out on top Sept. 15.

When Los Matadores debut, word is they'll be facing Cesaro and Swagger, per Dave Meltzer via WrestlingInc.com. That sounds more like a midcard tag feud than one centered around the tag team championships. Expect Zeb Colter's proteges to punish their opponents on the Night of Champions pre-show but to be busy with the bullfighters in the near future rather than with The Shield.

The Real Americans' recent record, other than a recent win over The Usos on SmackDown, has been poor.

The Prime Time Players have had their way with Swagger and Cesaro, beating them on the Aug. 28 Main Event and on Raw just over a week before that. Throw in an Aug. 12 loss to The Usos, and The Real Americans' recent win gets outweighed by their overflowing loss column.

2. The Usos

4 of 5

WWE can make Jimmy and Jey Uso challengers with confidence as The Usos gave The Shield a great match at Money in the Bank.

The rivalry following that event seemed at first to point to a rematch. The Usos spent a good amount of July taking on The Shield, with Mark Henry's help. It seemed inevitable that the brothers would face Reigns and Rollins in either a standard tag match or in a six-man tag with Henry at SummerSlam.

That match never came to pass.

WWE could conceivably tap into that history and give The Usos one more shot at the belts. The Usos have beaten 3MB, and The Real Americans recently have fared better against Rollins and Reigns than anyone in the Tag Team Turmoil match.

Only one team facing Jimmy and Jey at Night of Champions has a better shot of coming away the victors.

1. The Prime Time Players

5 of 5

The last time The Prime Time Players claimed the No. 1 contender’s spot, Team Hell No yanked it from them and went on a lengthy run with the championships.

Now fan favorites and riding a winning streak that only recently ended, Titus O'Neil and Darren Young are nearing the mountaintop once more. Other than their loss to the Wyatt Family Sept. 4, The Prime Time Players have been hot.

By pounding on 3MB to defeating The Real Americans several times, O'Neil and Young have quickly become the most credible challengers in the division. They offer a fresh challenge for The Shield and have a puncher's chance of upsetting the champs.

Don’t bet on The Prime Time Players dethroning The Shield, but the smart money for who comes out on top during the Night of Champions pre-show is on the team that sings about making "millions of dollars."
