Mayweather vs. Canelo: Defensive Strategy Will Lead Money to Victory

Kyle NewportJun 1, 2018

Floyd "Money" Mayweather's defensive fighting ability will be enough to beat Saul "Canelo" Alvarez at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on Sept. 14.

Canelo has a chance to shock the world by upsetting Money. Most people expect Mayweather to come out on top, so anything other than that would be stunning.

Mayweather is the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing with a career record of 44-0. Alvarez is 42-0-1 with 30 knockouts, but he hasn't gone up against anyone like Mayweather thus far in his career.

This will be a contrast of styles. Canelo uses power to beat up his opponents and is usually able to knock out his challengers. Money, on the other hand, is a defensive fighter. He moves around and can dip away from his opponents, waiting for his opportunity to strike from any angle.

If Canelo is going to have any chance, he's going to have to make his punches count. The 23-year-old will have to land powerful punches rather than try to make contact with many weaker hits.

However, Money is a good enough fighter to know what his opponents will do. He is aware of Canelo's strength. He will focus on being defensive early and let Alvarez wear himself down. Once that happens, Mayweather will strike.

He's a champion for a reason. Unlike his opponent, the 36-year-old doesn't go for the knockouts. He has only 26 knockouts in his career because he sticks to his own proven style.

Some view Mayweather's style as boring, but it's effective nonetheless.

The 5'8" boxer relies on his footwork in order to get the job done. His feet are in great position for throwing punches and being defensive. He can still get something behind his punches, and he has the ability to move around in that stance.

Opponents have a hard time landing punches against Mayweather, and they get surprised when Money counters. He has incredibly quick hands, which adds to the total package.

Mayweather is the best fighter in the world. His defensive strategy is tough to handle, and opponents get worn down trying to just land punches. It rarely happens, but Mayweather is able to respond with a few quick punches of his own.

It would be shocking to see Canelo win, but this bout is a nice contrast of styles. Power will try to overcome great defense and footwork, but as Money has shown throughout his career, he is able to outlast any fighter that he faces. He'll remain the champ.

Canelo is younger and stronger, but Money will be ready for the challenge.

Mayweather's defensive approach is too good for any fighter to take down, and Money will emerge from this bout with his undefeated record still intact.
