Manchester United Can Turn Summer Failure into a Victory with Deadline Day Deals

Simon EdmondsJun 8, 2018

One might have expected that in a summer which saw a new face take the reins at Old Trafford for the first time in 26 years, a whole bevy of world-class talent would be making their way to Manchester in an attempt to not only build upon the current ageing squad, but also to show the world that David Moyes means business.

Unfortunately for Moyes and United fans, thus far that has been far from the reality of things, with the Scotsman's only signing being the Uruguayan youth player, Guillermo Varela.

With the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester City and even longtime off-the-pace Liverpool all making some fantastic signings this summer, United and fellow Champions League contenders Arsenal have both been somewhat left at the starting line, as their rivals race forward to strengthen their sides.

That is set to change, however, with the news that Arsenal will be lodging a bid for not one but three Real Madrid players at an estimated £80 million.

Two of these targets, Mezut Ozil and Karim Benzema, are players who were top transfer priorities for United prior to them linking up with the Galacticos at the Bernabeu.

Ozil, in particular, is still a player that United desperately need to fill a void in the center of their lackluster midfield.

Losing out on a player of this quality to a rival like Arsenal is somewhat devastating from a fan's perspective, especially after the summer United has already had—bringing neither Thiago Alcantara nor Cesc Fabregas to Old Trafford, as had been hoped.

If this deal does go through for the Gunners, then United will suddenly enter into something of an "all-or-nothing" scenario to determine this window. While right now the reigning champions are looking down the barrel of abject failure, remarkably there is still a strong hope that this summer can be completely turned around in just one day.

I'm sure many fans have been keenly following the rumors for a while now, so it will come as no shock to many that United may be lining up a near-unheard-of one-day quadruple bid.

If successful, then United fans may soon be welcoming Leighton Baines, Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera and longtime transfer-target Daniele De Rossi to the stadium of dreams.

If all (or even just two or three) of these deadline-day deals come through for Moyes, then—in a magnificent turn of events—he will have suddenly turned defeat into victory in regards to this summer's market.

It was noticeable against both Chelsea and Liverpool that United desperately need someone for the center of the midfield. As such, Herrera, Fellaini and De Rossi should be the primary targets for today, with the deal for Baines taking something of a back seat (although it's likely this won't actually apply, with Baines and Fellaini seemingly only coming as part of a package or not at all).

Whatever the case, United need to act strongly and with real drive today or else face becoming the only big side in England to fall behind their fiercest rivals at the top of the league.
