Americans Abroad Wrap: Jozy Altidore Injured Before Crucial World Cup Qualifiers

0 of 5

It was another action-packed week for Americans playing abroad with goals for Jozy Altidore, Terrence Boyd and Sacha Kljestan.

Brek Shea and Will Packwood also made important progress in their return from injury, while Altidore picked up a new injury.

Finally, Oguchi Onyewu and Conor O'Brien are on the move again in transfer news.

Check all that out and much, much more in this week's Americans Abroad Wrap.

It was a week of highs and lows for Jozy Altidore this week in England. He scored his first goal for Sunderland midweek in the Capital One Cup against MK Dons, but then he suffered a hamstring injury in training and missed their league game against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The hamstring injury makes Altidore a doubt for the United States' upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Sunderland's loss to Crystal Palace puts them 19th in the league with one point from three games.

Geoff Cameron started at right-back again for Stoke in their 1-0 win over West Ham United. Stoke are off to a very bright start with six points from three games. Brek Shea got his first start in Stoke's midweek cup game against Walsall, playing 86 minutes in the 3-1 win. Maurice Edu did not make the 18-man matchday roster for either game.

Tim Howard and Everton tied Cardiff 0-0 with Howard earning the shutout. Everton has been shut out for two consecutive weeks and is winless in league play during the Roberto Martinez era.

Brad Guzan and Aston Villa had the weekend off.

Timmy Chandler continues his up-and-down season for Nurnberg. Once again, he seems to have lost his starting spot in the lineup. After starting last week against Bayern Munich, Chandler was again left out this weekend against Augsburg. He eventually came in as an 84th-minute substitute, but Nurnberg still lost, 1-0.

Jermaine Jones was a 78th-minute substitute in Schalke's 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen.

John Anthony Brooks played 90 minutes, but gave up a penalty as Hertha Berlin lost 2-0 to Wolfsburg.

Fabian Johnson started at left-back for Hoffenheim in their 6-2 loss to Stuttgart.

Michael Parkhurst was once again left out of the 18 for Augsburg.

Steve Cherundolo is still recovering from injury.

In Bundesliga 2, Bobby Wood came on at the half for 1860 Munich, but they lost 2-0 to Sandhausen.

Jonathan Spector played 90 minutes for Birmingham in their 1-1 draw with Ipswich. Will Packwood is also making a steady return from injury and played twice in reserve matches this week.

Danny Williams came on as a first-half substitute for Reading in the 38th minute as they beat Yeovil, 1-0.

Eric Lichaj started and went 90 minutes once again for Nottingham Forest, but they lost their first game of the season to Wigan, 2-1.

Tim Ream was not in the 18 for Bolton as they lost 4-1 to Blackburn. Stuart Holden is recovering from injury.

Terrence Boyd returned from injury on Sunday and scored in Rapid Vienna's 1-1 draw with Salzburg. His goal can be seen in the attached clip at the 1:00 mark.

Sacha Kljestan also got on the scoresheet with the opener in Anderlecht's 4-3 loss to Waregem.

Michael Bradley was a 72nd-minute substitute for Roma in their 3-0 win over Verona.

Alejandro Bedoya and Nantes tied Reims, 0-0. Bedoya went 90 minutes.

Aron Johannsson was a 71st-minute substitute for AZ Alkmaar in their 1-1 draw with Vitesse.

Mix Diskerud and Rosenborg beat Aalesund, 2-1. Diskerud played 82 minutes.

Oguchi Onyewu and Sporting Libson officially parted ways this week.

Josh Gatt is still recovering from injury.

Conor O’Brien made a surprising transfer this week, moving from FC Nordsjaelland to fellow Danish club OB. O'Brien had been playing fairly regularly for Nordsjaelland, starting three games in August.

Steve Clark started in the net for Honefoss, which tied Tromso, 1-1.

Tijuana lost to Chiapas 3-1. For the Xolos, Edgar Castillo started and went the distance, Paul Arriola started, but came off in the 13th minute, and Greg Garza came on as a 62nd-minute substitute. Joe Corona made the 18, but did not play. Herculez Gomez is still recovering from injury.

Alonso Hernandez made the 18, but did not play in Monterrey's 0-0 draw with Atlas.

Jose Torres started and played 84 minutes of Tigres' 1-1 draw with Veracruz.

DaMarcus Beasley and Michael Orozco both started in Puebla's 1-0 win over Atlante.
