Manchester United Transfer News: David Moyes Needs to Draw Line on Bids
The transfer deadline is only a few days away, so Manchester United boss David Moyes must be firm and not increase his bids any higher on current targets.
Mark Ogden of The Daily Telegraph reported that the club has increased its bid for Marouane Fellaini. United have offered Everton £20 million for the midfielder.
This comes shortly after the two clubs failed to reach an agreement for Fellaini and Leighton Baines. United had offered £28 million for the pair.
Andy Hunter of The Guardian reported that Everton recently rejected a £28 million bid for the two players.
Moyes has now upped his offer for Fellaini, but he should not go any higher for either player. David Anderson of the Daily Mirror reported that Everton wants £25 million for each player. If that's the case, United need to walk away from the table.
The Red Devils do need help at midfield. Getting Fellaini would be the best possible option, but they shouldn't overpay just to get him.
If the team is going to compete in the Champions League, getting a midfielder would be a key. UEFA's official website has the full draw.
United was placed in Group A, which puts it against Shakhtar Donetsk, Leverkusen and Real Sociedad. The Red Devils look like the team to beat in the group, but beating the teams in other pools won't be so simple.
Adding a midfielder would fill one of the team's only holes. Fellaini could be a defensive midfielder that lets his strikers take care of creating scoring chances.
The 25-year-old is a very physical player. The 6'4" midfielder uses his size to compete for the ball, and he challenges opponents in possession.
If the Red Devils can get Fellaini for £20 million, it would be a good addition. It's a steep price for a defensive midfielder. Anything more than that should have Moyes shaking his head.
Moyes is still looking to make a big splash. He has been looking for the right fit since taking over for Sir Alex Ferguson in July, but he hasn't been able to make a big move.
The boss doesn't need to overreach for a player and pay what Everton or another club wants. He needs to set a limit on what he is willing to spend. He has already raised his bid a few times for Fellaini, but he needs to turn down any other request from Everton for money.
Everton wants to make their former boss overspend. It managed to get Moyes to increase his offer and the club reportedly wants more.
Getting a midfielder would certainly help United's chances in the Champions League. However, overspending is not the way to fill a need.
Moyes can decide what his limit is and stick to it. He may lose out on filling a need, but he shouldn't be anxious to spend that much money for a midfielder.
