Erik Lamela Will Provide Instant Boost to Revitalized Tottenham Attack

Tim DanielsMay 31, 2018

Tottenham fell painfully short of a spot in the top four and a Champions League berth last term.

The club has done a nice job of rebuilding the attack during the summer and it appears Erik Lamela is set to become the latest marquee addition.

Roma's official website (h/t ESPN) reports that the team has already confirmed the sale of the talented forward to the Premier League side for €30 million and potential bonuses.

"I hope to do well also at Tottenham. I'd like to thank and say goodbye to the fans, who always treated me well. I send them all a big hug and they will always have a place in my heart," Lamela said.

Spurs haven't announced the signing, however, as they work toward a conclusion in the Gareth Bale saga.

Assuming the deal gets done, Lamela would become the fifth notable signing for Tottenham. Roberto Soldado, Paulinho, Etienne Capoue and Nacer Chadli were added earlier in the window to revitalize a squad that certainly didn't need a complete rebuild.

The 21-year-old forward is coming off a breakout campaign with Roma that saw him tally 15 goals and six assists in 35 matches across all competitions.

He's always showcased terrific playmaking ability, but the improved goalscoring production is what's going to take him to the next level.

Lamela has always shown off a dangerous combination of pace and creativity since debuting with River Plate, which puts constant pressure on opposing back lines. Now that he's starting to illustrate a reliable finishing touch, there aren't many flaws in his attacking game.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about his skill set is how quickly he's learned to maximize his pace.

There are countless players who arrive on the scene with blistering speed. Some eventually learn how to harness it and others don't.

Lamela is among those who did, and he was able to do so in the early stages of his career. So not only can he create space for himself with good runs, but he can take the ball in the midfield and make defenders miss on the attack.

He will be a welcome addition to a Tottenham attack that's notched just two goals in as many matches to start the new campaign. They won both contests, though, and that lack of attacking firepower should become far less of a concern once the new additions find a comfort zone at White Hart Lane.

Expect Lamela to slide right into the starting lineup with Soldado, Paulinho and Co. to build some much-needed chemistry.

That's always an overlooked factor when it comes to bringing in multiple transfers, but Tottenham continue to win despite a lack of offensive production, which should improve as the season goes on. The talent is definitely now in place after a strong summer.

Lamela fits in well with Spurs and should be an immediate factor as the club looks to build off its positive start to the new campaign.
