Manchester United Transfer Rumours: David Luiz, Marouane Fellaini and More Buzz

Tim DanielsAug 29, 2013

Manchester United are running out of time to take advantage of the transfer window. Yet, while David Moyes' first summer at the helm of the defending champion club hasn't gone exactly according to plan, there's still time to salvage some positives.

Things can happen quickly on the transfer market, especially with the deadline looming. Clubs are forced to make final decisions about players before the window closes, and United can take advantage of that to sign a couple of assets.

With that in mind, let's examine some of the latest buzz involving potential United targets. If Moyes is going to make the most of the transfer period's final days, now's the time to act. Otherwise, the window will close without any marquee additions.

David Luiz

United and Chelsea have been linked throughout the summer. For the most part, the focus has surrounded a potential Wayne Rooney move to the Blues. But now the Red Devils are returning the favor by showing serious interest in David Luiz.

Alan Nixon of the Daily Mirror reports United are considering a £30 million deal for the versatile defender. Despite the club's interest in Luiz, United doesn't want it to become a package deal that would also involve Rooney heading the other way.

"

New United manager David Moyes has made secret approaches for the buccaneering centre-half, who is also a target for Barcelona and has been left out of Jose Mourinho's sides early this season following a pre-season hamstring problem.

"

Luiz is coming off the best campaign of his career and, at 26, would be a smart long-term investment for United. Bolstering the back line has been one of the main items on the to-do list for Moyes and Co. The Brazilian international would do that in a major way.

Marouane Fellaini remains firmly on the United radar, unlike Leighton Baines. Despite failing to secure him with previous efforts, the Red Devils are prepared to make another bid, Mark Ogden of The Telegraph reports. The next offer to Everton will be for around £20 million.

"

But with the acrimony between the two clubs escalating in recent days, United are now ready to focus efforts on landing Fellaini before Monday’s transfer deadline, with manager David Moyes believing that Everton are more likely to sanction the sale of the 25-year-old on his own rather than as part of a deal with Baines.

"

The report goes on to say that Everton are considering James McCarthy from Wigan Athletic as a potential replacement for the midfielder. That should give United hope they will be able to land Fellaini if they can make a strong enough offer before the deadline.

Even though Fellaini isn't the flashy attacking midfielder many in the fanbase would probably prefer, he's a tireless worker who doesn't shy away from physical battles in the middle of the pitch. Often, that's where matches are won or lost, and he would help United in that area.

Eliaquim Mangala

Eliaquim Mangala is a newer addition to United's apparent target list. The 22-year-old defender has made great strides over the past couple seasons with Porto and it was only a matter of time before top clubs around Europe began to take notice.

Sure enough, Ben Jefferson of the Daily Express reports that United have joined Barcelona and Chelsea in taking an interest in the French international. The defending champions turned their attention to Mangala after failing to make progress toward a Ezequiel Garay deal.

"

United were reported to be focusing on Benfica's Ezequiel Garay but have been put off by the Portuguese club's £21.5m asking price.

Porto are thought to be very reluctant to part with Mangala, who joined from Standard Liege for £5.5m in August 2011, but could be willing to listen to offers in the region of £12m.

"

He's not as much of a proven commodity as Luiz is at this point, but his strong form last term paired with plenty of upside makes him an intriguing option. United have to have several options with so little time left to wheel and deal: He's a good one for Moyes to keep in mind.
